8 Interesting Facts about The Equine Hoof:
1. The front hooves are wider and rounder than the hind hooves. This is because the front feet bear more than half the weight of the horse.
2. The hoof is the first to take concussive forces as it hits the ground, then travels up the leg and dissipates.
3. When the unshod hoof hits the ground, the heel strikes first, followed by the bars, quarters, and toe. The expansion of the heels is helped by the elasticity of the hoof wall, which becomes thinner from toe to heels.
4. There are four ligaments that stabilize the cartilage of the coffin bone, which is attached to the inner hoof wall. They are the common digital extensor tendon, Lateral collateral ligament of the pattern joint, lateral collateral ligament of the coffin joint and the lateral cartilage of the coffin bone. When you have Flexion/extension restriction horses tend to have a history of grabbing heels and pulling their front shoes off.
5. The Lamina is the middle layer between the hoof wall and coffin bone, this is what connects the hoof wall to the coffin bone.
6. Bony injuries and soft tissue injuries change biomechanics of the hoof, which can result in the inability to absorb shock as well.
7. Ideally the coronary band should be level when you look at the hoof from the front of the horse. This is considered normal if one side is higher than the other then you have an imbalance.
8. A clubbed foot is caused by flexor contraction. This has to be managed differently by the farrier and handled with care.
It is so important to have both a good bodyworker/chiropractor, farrier and vet on your team to help you and your horse have the best possible feet they can grow!
