*****About the Synthetic Ice Surface*****

For many years, synthetic ice has been a beneficial training tool used by players at all levels, up to and including the NHL. Most commonly, it is used as a personal aid for shooting and stick handling, and is a great way for players to be able to improve their

skills at home. When it comes to skating on synthetic surfaces, it has often acquired a less than stellar reputation. That being that it 'doesn't feel like real ice'. YES, synthetic ice is, and feels different than real ice. However, this is actually one the biggest and most overlooked benefits of training on synthetic ice. When a player skates on synthetic ice, there is roughly 15% less glide per stride (this also applies to puck glide). This decrease in glide forces players to push 15% harder each stride. Essentially, the player is resistance skating which directly translates to significantly improved performance on real ice in terms of the player's first step explosiveness, speed and acceleration. I am confident and believe in this product and training because I have personally experienced the benefits and noticeable improvement after a summer of training on synthetic ice. We all know the game is getting faster and everyone is looking to get that extra edge, WE can be a major factor in helping you achieve that edge.

*****About the Coach*****

Jadran grew up and played his youth hockey in Sudbury, eventually leading to his final season with the Sudbury Nickel Capitals. From there, he was drafted in the 2nd round of the 2003 OHL Draft by the Peterborough Petes. Beljo went on to accumulate 101 Goals, 120 Assists for 221 points in 267 career OHL games while suiting up for the Peterborough Petes, Mississauga IceDogs and London Knights. Following his final OHL season, Jadran earned an invite to the Toronto Maple Leafs Camp where he unfortunately suffered a shoulder injury that forced him to miss the full season. Jadran then went on to play in the Austrian EBEL and ECHL before deciding to return to Canada and attend University. He joined the Lakehead Thunderwolves for 2 seasons, before focusing his studies in Business and joining the Windsor Lancers, where they won an OUA Championship in his final year. Having the great fortune of learning from some of the best coaches in the game from the likes of Dale Hunter, Dick Todd and Greg Gilbert, Jadran is eager to share the knowledge he has gained over his career with the next generation of hopeful athletes. Jadran’s focus is on developing and improving players’ skill, creating and reinforcing good game habits, increasing confidence and sharing his passion for the game.

PlayMaker Hockey Academy is excited to announce that coach Al will be joining the team this summer.

Hailing from Kapuskasing, ON, Alain settled down in Sudbury 6 years ago after his hockey playing career.
Having played in various leagues (NCAA, QMJHL, AHL, ECHL and Europe) has given coach Al valuable experience and teaching methods. A few career highlights include being drafted to Boston Bruins, and being a World Jr A tournament, RBC Cup champion.

Great coaches like Jerome Dupont, Bruce Cassidy, and Steve Potvin have helped shape the coaching and training methods used shaped his player development philosophy. Skill development sessions for NOHA, coaching team NOHA, and attending hockey Canada NCMP (coach mentorship program) have helped further his knowledge of coaching and skill training.

Growing up in the North, we face challenges with training and ice time opportunities. Synthetic ice is a great tool to simulate on ice training and it goes beyond by challenging players with its different qualities.

The SMHA Board is excited to announce a new partnership with PlayMaker Hockey Academy for our Rep program. This will build upon the excellent hockey development program implemented by SMHA for House League players during the 2022-2023 season. Under the guidance of Jadran Beljo, an alumnus of the Sudbury hockey scene, PlayMaker Hockey Academy focuses on developing and improving players' skill, creating and reinforcing good game habits, and increasing player confidence.

The goal is to give every young player the solid foundation they will need to be successful, so that we can continue to expand on that foundation and prepare them for whatever their next level may be. The way we can achieve these goals is by providing a structured, year-round, on and off ice program within the Hockey Canada Guidelines for every team and player from U9 to U18. Consistent messaging, feedback and milestone achievement will be an important factor in tracking tangible results within the program. Whether a player wants to move from A to AA or is looking to get drafted into the OHL, they can be confident in knowing what they are working on during practices and games is precisely what is necessary to prepare them for the next level. A structured program will help ensure players and teams are reaching milestones, so that we know our starting point the following season. The video sessions will help increase and develop Hockey IQ at a young age and at a progressive pace. This program will maximize the player development by avoiding unnecessary overlaps in teaching from season to season.

The Sudbury Minor Hockey Association is looking forward to continuing to foster the growth and development of youth hockey alongside PlayMaker Hockey Academy.
