Simone Boudreau has big ideas, and through the connections she’s made here at SMU, she’s making those ideas a reality.

She was chosen as a Top 10 Outstanding Leader in Canada this year—and for good reason.

Among Simone’s entrepreneurial ventures is a dedicated attention to sport and athletics. She’s served on the board of Sail Able Nova Scotia and is currently working on a menstrual health initiative that supports research into the long-term health and wellbeing of women athletes.

The Scott McCain & Leslie McLean Centre for Sport, Business and Health helped support her in presenting at a 2024 sports business conference, and we’re thrilled to include her as on the growing list of stellar graduates of the Certificate in Sports Business program.

In “Reclaiming Tom Longboat”, sociologist Janice Forsythe draws on a series of oral and textual resources to examine the Tom Longboat Awards and its role in Canadian policy.

The Tom Longboat awards (named after distance athlete Tom Longboat, member of the Onondaga Nation from Six Nations of the Grand River,) were established in 1951 to honour Indigenous athletes in Canada.

Forsythe explores the origin and history of the awards and examines sport in Canada as both as a tool of colonialism and as a possible pathway to decolonization.
