𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝓓𝓞𝓔𝓢 𝙥𝙪𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 “𝙛𝙪𝙣” 𝙞𝙣 𝙁𝙐𝙉𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙛𝙞𝙩𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨?

Kids grow up learning essential body awareness skills that challenge various senses. Having instructed children from ages 6-12 it’s easy to see how they build on these skills while still enjoying what they are doing.

Proprioception: perceiving the location, movement, and action of parts of the body.

Vestibular: sense of balance and spatial orientation using the inner ear to coordinate movement with balance.

Kinaesthetic: involves feeling the movement of limbs and joints especially when in contact with various surfaces.

These were learned mainly through play movements such as jumping, crawling, running, hopping, throwing, pulling, climbing, and walking along logs and curbs.

As we age many adults lose the desire to participate in unstructured “play” as “that’s for kids”. These types of play movements are often replaced with structured sports and activities where types of body movement is pre-determined, and quite often linear. Or maybe someone has little to no movement in their life..period.
This over time may lead to stability and balance issues, lack of co-ordination, strength and being able to move quickly with confidence.

This is where I believe it is important to introduce game-based fitness activities to everyone and especially the older population. Movements and equipment setups are kept simple, safe and varied by working on all planes of motion that will help build the confidence to complete everyday tasks.

Combing unstructured movement to challenge all muscles, plus incorporating some resistance training that uses movements that can transfer to everyday life skills such as getting up out of a chair, carrying groceries and lifting items up onto a shelf will be of great benefit to live life independently.

Let’s highlight one the most under appreciated and under utilized types of movement…WALKING!
Walking is the simplest and one of THE best exercises you can do for your body anywhere and anytime! Inside, outside, malls, your living room, on a treadmill..

Walking comes in all shapes, styles, methods, and speeds because we are ALL unique in our awesome abilities! It really comes down to moving your body the best way for you, and you don’t have to do a marathon(though props if you want to!👊🏻) just dedicate a few minutes a day to start and reap these amazing benefits!
