A life with horses is always filled with joy, trials, tribulations, success and then sadness. Their lives are not as long as ours. It is our honour to know them, work with them, try to understand them as they try their best to communicate with no words and we are permitted to ride them and enjoy their power and athleticism as well as bask in their love and ability to forgive us for our mistakes.

I said goodbye to Raven today after 14 years together. The day I met her, she put her head on my chest as if to say, I have chosen you. But things were not easy. She was started three times. Only the third time, after working with Keriann Penning using Warwick Schiller principles, did I get a horse that never threw me or anyone else. I continued to follow those principles and developed a horse that was soft and responsive, a real joy to ride when she was on. She could still be anxious and forward but those times could be worked through. Her anxiety got in the way of some things as we couldn't easily trailer anywhere, but getting on her at home was still a joy. I learned so much through all of her foibles and she loved me and forgave me when I lost my temper.

These are the ups and downs of spending our lives with horses.

Rest in peace in your painfree life across the rainbow bridge, my love.

Off to the Wellington Waterloo Hunter Pace this Sunday. The thunderstorms held off and it was a terrific run. This little horse was a star on her first Hunter Pace. All hail the mighty Jane!
