Here comes weighted vest season. Not everyone should just slap one on and go. There are some things to consider before deciding.
Use extra caution or modify if you have or experience any of the following:

* Knee, hip, ankle, or foot arthritis.
* Meniscal injuries.
* Plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, or other lower-extremity tendon problems.
* Significant scoliosis or spinal stenosis.
* Pelvic-floor dysfunction/prolapse.
* Shoulder, clavicle, or upper-trapezius problems aggravated by pressure from the vest.
* Poor gait mechanics or inability to walk comfortably without added load.
* Peripheral neuropathy or reduced sensation in the feet.
* Significant obesity or someone already unaccustomed to weight-bearing exercise.
* Older adults who have not previously performed loaded exercise.

Here’s a good screening rule:

Before adding a vest, I’d want the person to be able to walk, squat/sit-to-stand, step and maintain upright posture pain-free without external load. The vest shouldn’t cause a change in gait, forward trunk lean, joint pain, numbness/tingling, pelvic pressure, unusual shortness of breath, dizziness, or chest symptoms.

For a healthy beginner, ~5% of body weight is a conservative starting point. There usually isn’t a reason to jump immediately to the commonly quoted 10% unless the person already has good loading tolerance.

Don’t just train smart IN the gym. Train smart all of the time.
