Not sure it’s a real profile but it is a real problem! And we’re thankful to have parents who volunteer their time where needed
Everybody wants youth sports to exist.
Far fewer people want to be the reason they exist.
Forty-four boys signed up to play soccer. Only one adult volunteered to help coach, so the entire season could be cancelled.
That isn’t a shortage of interest. It’s a shortage of ownership.
I understand why parents hesitate. We’re working, hauling kids around, helping with homework, making dinner, and trying to keep the house from looking like raccoons broke in.
Some also assume coaching requires years of experience.
It doesn’t.
A recreational team doesn’t need a professional coach. It needs someone dependable enough to organize practice, encourage the kids, and occasionally point everyone toward the correct goal.
We say kids need less screen time, more exercise, and stronger communities. But none of that happens automatically.
Registration fees can buy uniforms and reserve fields. They cannot build a program.
People do.
Not every parent can coach every season. But youth sports cannot survive if every parent decides someone else will handle it.
If the kids are willing to show up, a few adults have to be willing to show up for them.
