The disrespect I’ve received from a Calgary club, and the federation they’re co- share holders in, is not only sleazy but an embarrassment for what martial arts stands for. The federation that they support WKU, is nothing but a money grab, that bleeds the participants financially. In order to qualify for the world class competition, participants have to fight in the nationals. Anyone can enter the nationals, and most of the time there’s no one to fight. Most participants either get a “walk-through” (which means: you pay and automatically go to the worlds) or fight an exhibition with somebody of less skill or a different weight class. Either way, they automatically qualify for the worlds. After having to buy brand new equipment, brand new outfits all at the cost of the participant. They are forced to stay at hotels that have been blocked out by the Federation and charged astronomical rates. When at the worlds, athletes fighting in Muay Thai, K-1, or full contact in most cases have less than three people in their category and are guaranteed a spot on the podium. These athletes come back with the idea that they’re world class athletes??? There are so many scams and money grabs out there and this one is by far the worst I’ve seen in the martial arts community. If you want to call yourself a world class athlete earn it like the rest of us had to.
