1956 photo of two of the race boats Miss Kelowna & Restless III owned by local power boating legend Art Jones. (photo taken at the corner of Leon and Abbott.) Jones (aka The Silver Fox) was born in England 1882, he moved to Kelowna in 1908 and opened A.J. Jones Boat Works. That same year, Jones appeared on the sports pages of the local paper by placing second in “the fastest gasoline launch race” in Kelowna. After serving in the Navy during World War I, Jones returned to Kelowna and carried on with building and racing boats including well-known crafts named Princess Pat, Yellow Peril, Thunderbird and Miss Kelowna. Then, in 1952, he bought a 225-class hydroplane out of California named Restless III. When Jones brought the boat back to Okanagan Lake he set a new Canadian speed record at 89.9 miles per hour. In 1956, Jones put Restless III in the water again and set another record traveling in excess of 100 miles per hour; the fastest Jones or Restless III had ever gone. That same year, he took his other hydroplane, Miss Kelowna, to a new record for its class at 80 miles per hour. This was at the age of 74!
