Why the Psoas Matters

The psoas is often called the "muscle of the soul" which isn't just a poetic name. It's one of the only muscles in the body that directly connects your spine to your legs, running from the lower back, through the pelvis, to the top of the femur. That means it plays a role in almost everything: walking, standing tall, stabilizing the spine, even breathing.

But here's the part most people don't know: the psoas is also deeply tied to your nervous system. It sits close to the diaphragm and is wired into the fight-or-flight response. When you're stressed, anxious, or in "go mode," the psoas contracts because it's part of the primal instinct to curl inward and protect the body. The problem is, most of us don't release that tension afterward. Add in hours of sitting (car, desk, couch), and the psoas stays short and tight for most of the day, every day.

Over time, a chronically tight psoas can contribute to:
-Low back pain and stiffness
-Poor posture (that forward hip tilt/anterior pelvic tilt)
-Shallow breathing
-Restricted hip mobility
-A lingering sense of physical "holding" or tension, even at rest

Stretching and releasing the psoas isn't just about flexibility, it can help signal to your nervous system that it's safe to relax, supporting that shift from sympathetic (stress) to parasympathetic (rest) state. That's why psoas work is often paired with slow breathing: the muscle and the breath are neighbors, and calming one helps calm the other.

A few minutes of intentional psoas stretching, like the standing variation Rina showed, can help unwind both the physical tightness and some of that stored tension, especially if you sit a lot or notice your stress showing up as a tight lower back or hips.

✨ Discover the Transformative Practice of Kundalini Yoga ✨

In a world that constantly pulls our attention outward, Kundalini Yoga offers an invitation to journey inward.

Known as the Yoga of Awareness, Kundalini is far more than a physical practice. It weaves together dynamic movement, intentional breathwork, meditation, mantra, mudra, and sound to awaken your inner energy, quiet the mind, and deepen your connection to yourself. Rather than focusing solely on flexibility or strength, Kundalini works with the body's energetic systems, helping cultivate resilience, clarity, vitality, and a profound sense of inner peace.
It's a practice that has the power to shift how you feel—not just during class, but long after you leave the mat.

At Kelowna Yoga Hub, we're proud to offer one of the community's few opportunities to experience this deeply transformative style of yoga. We believe yoga is not one-size-fits-all, which is why we intentionally embrace a diverse range of traditions and practices, allowing each person to discover the path that speaks to them.

Whether you're seeking stress relief, spiritual growth, renewed energy, or simply a new way to experience yoga, Kundalini welcomes you exactly as you are.

🧘 Join us for KUNDALINI YOGA every Tuesday from 5:30–6:45 PM.
✨ Come awaken your awareness.
✨ Come experience the extraordinary.
✨ Come discover why this ancient practice continues to transform lives.
All levels are welcome. 💛

THE POWER IN YOUR HANDS with Yoga Instructor Rose Robson

Did you know your hands hold the ability to shift your entire state of being?

In yoga and meditation traditions, mudras — sacred hand gestures — have been used for thousands of years to direct the flow of energy (prana) through the body. Each fingertip corresponds to a different element: earth, water, fire, air, and space. When we bring our fingers together in specific patterns, we create subtle energetic circuits that influence our nervous system, our emotions, and our state of mind.

Your hands are more than tools for doing. They're gateways for being.

Tip Tuesday: High Lunge (Alanasana)

High Lunge is an energizing standing posture that builds strength, stability, and focus while creating space through the hips and front body.

Focuses on:
• Strengthening the legs, glutes, and core
• Opening the hip flexors and front of the body
• Improving balance, stability, and concentration
• Encouraging mindful breath and strong, grounded movement

Tip: Keep your front knee stacked over your ankle and gently draw your tailbone down as you lengthen through the crown of your head. Breathe deeply and allow your breath to support both strength and ease.

Find strength in your foundation, and freedom in your breath.

Take a moment to notice: Where can you create more strength, and where can you soften?
