If you have been out hunting already this year or planned to soon, there has been an update to the CWD testing zones in our area since last year.

For the 2026/2027 hunting season, lots of WMUs have officially become a mandatory CWD testing zone.
According to the updated 2026 Alberta Hunting Draws regulations and Alberta CWD Surveillance updates, the mandatory testing footprint has expanded westward. Hunters who harvest a deer (both mule deer and white-tailed deer) in these areas during the 2026 season are now legally required to submit the head for testing.

As an avid hunter it is important that you review the regulations every year, especially for updates like this that may affect you.

🏆 Annual Trophy Competition 2026 🏆

Hey members! Trophy Measuring Day is set for Saturday, December 19th from 11 AM to 3 PM at Burbank Hall (where the Blindman meets the Red Deer River).

Scoring is first come, first served, so bring your horns, antlers and skulls clean and dry, plus a field photo of you and your harvest (digital or a 4x6 print). Snacks and beverages will be served!

Can't make it that day? Get your entry measured by appointment any time between now and Dec 30 at the Powell Residence. Call 403-782-3893 and ask for Dave. Appointments run 10 AM to 7 PM most days - bring your entry to 26212 TP Road 402. No charge.

Fish and bird entries need your name, address, phone number and a full description, ideally on the AWF entry form (albertawildlifefederation.ca).

Quick reminders:
• You must be a member with your membership purchased Jan 1 - Aug 15, 2026
• Animals must be taken on a current licence and harvested in Alberta
• All entrants sign a Fair Chase Statement
• One category per entry
• Trophies entered in another AWF-affiliated club competition are not eligible here

Winners will be celebrated at Awards Night in 2027 (date to be announced).

THANK YOU to everyone who joined us at the 2026 Kids Can Catch event at the Len Thompson Pond this past Saturday. After the weather forecast called for rain all week, it turned out to be a perfect day.

THANK YOU to our sponsors. Families got to release ~1000 rainbow trout supplied by Smoky Trout Farm. Face painters were on site courtesy of Dow Chemicals Prentiss. AHEIA (Alberta Hunter Education Instructors' Association) was busy educating future archers. Hot dogs and hamburgers were served courtesy of Heidelberg Materials. A special thanks also to Servus Credit Union, MEG Global and Len Thompson Lures.

The Lacombe Fishing and Game Association is excited to welcome families back for our annual Kids Can Catch event on Saturday, June 6, 2026 at the beautiful Len Thompson Fishing Pond in Lacombe!

This free family event is a great opportunity to introduce kids to fishing, conservation, and the outdoors in a fun and welcoming environment.

The 2026 Awards Night was a great success once again. A little late getting photos posted as I had issues with the phone, but pictures got recovered and are finally here.

Have your say on proposed changes to Alberta’s migratory bird seasons. Feedback closes Feb 15.

Environment and Climate Change Canada is consulting on proposals that could affect future hunting opportunities, including:
• Expanding Sandhill Crane seasons into 14 additional PWMUs
• Adding PWMU 247 to Zone 1
• Exploring a future Mourning Dove season (not before Fall 2028)
• Considering a limited Tundra Swan draw in a later round

These are proposals only — no changes are final yet.

If you care about hunting opportunities, wildlife, or how seasons are managed in Alberta, this is your opportunity to be part of the process rather than just watching it unfold.
