Here’s a peek at my DEXA scan results — and this is only a tiny portion of what’s included in the full report.

DEXA gives me a much more detailed look at my body composition, including:

🦴 Bone mineral density
💪 Lean mass & muscle distribution
🔥 Total body fat
📍 Visceral fat
⚖️ Fat distribution
📊 How my results compare with age-based reference ranges

But the part I find most valuable is the context.

The written report goes beyond simply giving me numbers. It explains what those numbers mean, identifies strengths and opportunities, and provides recommendations that consider my age, lifestyle, training, recovery, and overall health picture.

My results show a lot of things I’m really proud of — particularly my lean mass, muscle reserve, leg mass, favourable fat distribution, and bone density.

There are also opportunities to improve my body composition, but the goal isn’t aggressive weight loss.

It’s optimization.

Preserve the muscle. Support strong bones. Improve metabolic health. Train well. Recover well. And build a body that continues to serve me well for decades to come.

Before I reveal my DEXA scan results, I want to tell you a little bit about me.

I’m not extraordinary.

I don’t have an athletic background. I don’t win competitions. I don’t have a collection of athletic stats worth bragging about.

But I have a body that has carried me through a hell of a lot.

I had an eating disorder.
I overcame an eating disorder.
I ran a marathon.
I carried and birthed two children.
I’ve spent many, many hours in a tattoo chair.

And for the last nine years, I have deliberately, relentlessly, sometimes imperfectly, built a body I am incredibly proud of.

A body that is strong.
A body that is capable.
A body that is still evolving.
A body I have tested, pushed, challenged, and changed.

A body that refuses to conform to the idea that women should strive to be smaller, thinner, daintier, quieter.

I am not a delicate flower. I’m 5’5” and 170 lbs.
I’m 44 years old and navigating the rough waters of perimenopause.
I have a jiggly belly. Cellulite. Stretch marks. Spider veins.
I don’t always love how my body looks. Sometimes my clothes are a little snugger than I’d like.

And you know what?

None of that diminishes what this body is capable of.

I am incredibly proud of this body.
And deeply grateful for it.
For everything it has carried me through.
For everything it has survived.
For everything it can do.
And for everything it hasn’t done yet.

Nine years ago, I found CrossFit Ladysmith, now Motus Fitness, and it changed the way I understood my body.

I was given education, guidance, community, and the tools to build something that wasn’t simply smaller.

I built something stronger.

So recently, I had a DEXA scan at Cowichan DEXA

I wanted to know what nine years of showing up, lifting heavy things, eating to support my body, pushing myself, resting, starting over, and doing it all again had actually created.

Not because I needed a number to tell me whether my body was “good enough.”

But because I was curious.

Because I wanted the data.

Because sometimes it’s pretty damn cool to see the evidence of all the work you’ve put in.

And turns out…

this body I’ve been building?

She’s strong as hell.

Ever wonder what you’re made of? I have … so I decided to find out.

I’m Jodi, one of the coaches at Motus Fitness here in Ladysmith. I love a heavy barbell, Olympic weightlifting, and burpees. I do not love being upside down or running. I’m 44, in peri-menopause, and starting to concern myself with muscle retention and bone density.

I recently turned to Cowichan DEXA to understand my body more.

A DEXA scan is a highly accurate, non-invasive imaging test that uses a very low dose of X-ray to measure bone density, muscle mass, and body fat with precision.

My appointment was pleasant and non-invasive, with the scan itself only taking 6 or 7 minutes. Dr. McIlmoyle took time to really understand my lifestyle and the demands of my training and how it can be expected to show up in my body. He understood what I was hoping to learn from this scan and was very thorough in his explanations to me.

Stayed tuned for my next post where I’ll show you my results!

Some workouts feel like an endless slog and it takes everything you have to keep going.

But you keep going.

Sure, a fast-paced workout with a heavy barbell is flashy and makes for excellent social media content.
But not giving up when the workout gets tough, pushing through fatigue, putting one foot in front of the other and getting the work done one step at a time, that’s inspiring.

Move fast or move slow, just keep moving.
