Merry Christmas everyone! Upcoming classes Saturday the 27th Nogi at 10am and Tuesday December 30 at 6:30pm and back to regular schedule the following week. will be having a class on Monday the 29th at the usual times as well.

Had an awesome time at the Lucas Barbosa seminar this weekend.

Day 1 (Nogi): Front headlock attacks from turtle with super efficient transitions into chokes while keeping tight positional control. Wrapped up with tough positional rounds in a room stacked with black belts and upper belts.

Day 2 (Gi): Mount attacks, counters, and a ton of sharp details built around controlling reactions and maintaining dominant top pressure. More positional rounds, then open rolling where I definitely found myself on the receiving end of Hulk smash.

Great vibes all around. Huge turnout and a deep pool of skill from teams across the South Island. hosted an incredibly welcoming room and we even got to witness some big promotions.

Even though there are a few bad apples in the local scene, the positive far outweighs the negative. The community is full of great leaders and role models and weekends like this make it even better.

Vancouver ADCC Open 2025

Five weeks out I decided to jump in. As a masters athlete, I had to build up slow — years on the mats mean you’ve gotta respect recovery.

Chest infection, shoulder and elbow inflammation… not great, but we pushed on. 💥

Then two weeks out — freak accident. Broken nose. Surgery the next day. 🫠

The 40+ Advanced bracket was stacked, even a possible match with a former UFC fighter. So we adjusted. No wrestling. All leg locks. Protect the face at all costs 😂

Weigh-ins went smooth. Too smooth. All I could think was, “If anyone gets around my head, I’m done.”

Luck swung my way — first opponent no-showed, straight to the finals. I watched my opponent pull guard and dive for legs. Perfect.

After some leg pummeling, I landed an outside heel hook from 50/50 for the win.

Life gave me every excuse not to compete — injuries, surgery, doubt — but I showed up anyway.

Sometimes that’s the real win. 👊
