Brits Get Hearing Protection, Canadians Get Bureaucracy

Big news from across the pond: Great Britain has officially reformed its laws to allow law-abiding shooters to purchase and use sound moderators (suppressors) for fi****ms. As of 2026, these devices are no longer classified as fi****ms. They are now properly recognized as safety tools that reduce noise, protect hearing, and minimize disturbance in communities.

The British government’s evidence-based approach is something we at the Canadian Shooting Sports Association have advocated for in Canada for years. In the UK, shooters and hunters can now access sound moderators without the bureaucratic red tape that once stood in the way. This is a win for health, safety, and common sense.

Meanwhile, here in Canada, suppressors remain banned for civilian use. This is despite overwhelming international evidence showing they make shooting safer for everyone. Shooters, bystanders, and neighbours all benefit. Without access to sound moderators, Canadians who enjoy sport shooting or need fi****ms for rural life continue to risk permanent hearing damage and put up with unnecessary community noise.

Both Canada and the UK pride themselves on health and safety standards. Yet only one is currently willing to let science and practical experience guide public policy. We believe it is time for Canada to re-examine its stance and consider the real-world benefits that sound moderators provide. Our members, who are responsible and law-abiding fi****ms owners, deserve access to the same safety innovations as shooters in Britain and around the world
Let’s bring Canadian policy in line with international best practices. Let’s make health and safety a priority for everyone.

This has been my least active year of instructing since I started in 2000. Sorry for the inconvenience of my drifting towards retirement.

I've finally updated my website with course dates for this Fall. I'm away for most of August so my next course will be a weekday one on September 9th in Limoges. If there's a ton of demand, I might add a weekend one later in September as well. I've scheduled two CFSC's on Saturdays in October. After that I head south for the winter...

If you have a group of 8-10 people who would like a private CFSC on a weekday, reach out to me. My weekends are still pretty occupied with shooting competitions.

The last gun with a high capacity magazine that you can legally buy in Canada! EOSC IDPA bought several for setting up competitions and they worked great. These are ideal for stapling up targets and $10 cheaper than on Amazon:
