Skinfolds definitely aren’t for the faint of heart. I mean, who wants another person grabbing your fat and measuring it? 😬

We don’t do these often, but when we do, boy those numbers don’t lie.

For this client, she had been in the fitness world on and off for years, had lost weight before, gained some back, and wanted to find a healthy, sustainable, and manageable way to drop some lbs and lean out. 💪🏻

We’re all about helping find that balance ⚖️

Over the course of a year we worked together to implement a plan that worked for her, and took a few measurements. 📏

She didn’t just lose weight; she lost fat mass and gained strength while at it 🤗 Oh and also gained a whole lotta confidence and a glow 🌞

There were definitely some weeks that made it challenging between work and family obligations, but she was dedicated to the cause, and continued with her gym and at home programs consistently to get here.

Now we’re just looking at maintaining now that she’s at her goal weight.

Congrats girl, you deserve it all ❤️ So proud of your hard work.

Why do you exercise? 🤔

Is it to feel strong? Powerful? Confident? 💪🏻

Is it to stay healthy and prevent future disease? To be there for your family for years to come? To keep up with your kids? 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

There are so many reasons to be active. 💭

Our client here at De Novo has been working out with us consistently since the end of January this year, and had the goal to get off some of her medications (specifically her blood pressure one).

She’s well on her way to getting there! In January, her BP was 150/90, and most recently, she hit 112/77!

Now THAT is something that will keep her risk of additional chronic disease lower in the future, and soon she will be able to ease off her medication (with her Dr.’s assistance).

This is just one huge benefit she is noticing among many others. 🤗

Change doesn’t happen overnight, you have to stick with it. But believe us, a year from now, you’ll be happy you did 😄

What’s holding you back?

“I no longer have low back pain when I’m carrying around my backpack with textbooks in it” 🎒

Why do YOU workout? 🤔

If you don’t have a reason other than “I probably should,” that’s not going to cut it. When life gets busy and it feels hard to keep up with, the one thing that will always bring you back is your ‘WHY.’

WHY are you working out❓

For this client, there was many reasons to get active, but one thing she said at the beginning was she wants to be able to hike without low back pain. Every time she would carry a backpack hiking (even a light one), she would get some low back pain and it made her less likely to do the thing she wanted to.

⏩ Fast forward about 5 months, we were talking about changes she’s noticed, and she brought up that she can now carry her backpack (full of textbooks) around campus without hurting.

That’s attributed to the core/ trunk work we’ve been doing consistently for 5 months now.

I have no doubt that when hiking season starts back up next year, she’ll be climbing those mountains like crazy 🏔️

It’s never easy, it’s not a quick process, but once you establish your reasons and your goals, there’s always something to look forward to ☺️

So proud of this one 💪🏻

Beginner series: How to perform a proper RDL (Romanian Deadlift)

1️⃣ Before you begin the movement, pull your shoulders back, engage your lats (arms tucked at sides) and ensure you have a neutral spine.

2️⃣ The RDL is a simple hip hinge. This means the first movement is your hips travel back ➡️
Push your hips back as far as you can. Picture a rope pulling you backwards at the hips.

A common mistake is making your initial movement a bend at the hips and dropping the chest instead of pushing the hips back.

3️⃣ Always keep the weight close to you. It should be brushing your legs the whole time.

4️⃣ Don’t go all the way to the floor. You should NOT feel this movement in your low back. If you do, you’re going to far.

Take a look in the mirror with no weight, and see how far your hips can push back before they stop traveling. After this point, the full lift will be through your lower back. For most people the stopping point is just below the knees- mid shin, but varies based on body type, so it’s good to check before you throw on a lot of weight.

5️⃣ Push back up from the bottom of your lift, engaging your glutes the whole way up (not just at the top).

A common mistake is overextending, squeezing the glutes only at the top. This puts more unnecessary pressure through your low back as well.

Lastly, Try to keep a soft knee and tension on the hamstrings throughout the movement.

If you found this post helpful, remember to save it for later!
