As hundreds gathered, to honour the members of the Humboldt Broncos team, we were asked to take our phones out and use the lights to illuminate the arena. As police, firemen and first responders stood honour guard on the ice that our boys call home, the crowd stood silent. I did not bring my usual cameras to document the crowds or take images of the pain in peoples eyes, and I hesitated for a moment before taking this one image that shows the outpouring of support from our hockey family.

Ten years.....so I get to write a bit and explain how things are going. This year will be different and you deserve to know why.
Ten years....since I started shooting for the Lloydminster Bobcats. Not something I’d ever thought I’d do and it totally baffled my family as I wasn’t even a hockey fan. Ten years ago, I took over the agreement to provide images to the team in exchange for the right to sell images to friends, family and fans.
Initially, I was to shoot some headshots and some action shots along with the team photo. Maybe cover 6-8 games a season. What people have become accustomed to is every home game possible. Files full of images of their boys, and our one girl, available during the season and post season. And I’ve enjoyed most of it. I could of done without the one trip to hospital, the plate sized bruises from pucks and that one concussion that was extra special. But I’ve been able to watch the players grow and develop. Have friendships with some amazing families and hang out with the best volunteers. Hundreds of hours invested each season and I never “broke even”...despite the support of the families, billet families and fans. This is a job one does for the joy of seeing people have an image of their player that you can provide. Standing in a cold arena, dodging pucks and listening to the players as they beak back and forth, feeling the disappointment as things don’t go well and being at ice level as they celebrate the things that do go well. I have personally been privileged to hear from top media outlets that my images are on par with the best in the industry and have supplied images to many hometown newspapers, provincial publications and three national campaigns.
For anyone that has followed this page you know that the past two years have been a health nightmare for my hubby and I. If you care to see, our adventures are chronicled in Dan, dialysis and his buddy Gizmo - on Facebook. Suffice it to say, his life as it is is only possible due to the remarkable skills of so many health professionals. And we are very thankful for that. With his life an ever present concern as there is no “get better” at this point and only a “maybe he can get on the transplant list” sometime in the next year or three...we struggle. One of our struggles is finding work that fits with our life. And at the moment that means I work evenings almost everyday. Shorter shifts that make it possible for me to enjoy a more relaxed morning to help with dialysis needs. Dan does Home Peritoneal Dialysis everyday to keep him alive. Shorter shifts mean working 7 days a week to get enough hours to pay the bills. Not have any extras but just get by. To get group benefits I need to maintain a minimum number of hours...so even if the Bobcats could afford to pay me, they can’t replace the hours I need to have desperately needed group benefits.
I chatted with Nigel the other day and explained all this to him and felt my loyal fans of the page needed a longer explanation than...”I won’t be able to come to all the games this year due to personal reasons “ This doesn’t mean my cameras will be gathering dust on a shelf. I do hope to get out to a few games as work allows and still provide a team photo once trade deadlines pass. I will be checking with some other sports shooters to see if they are willing to take on some of the load and possibly showcase their talents.
So until my work shifts can be altered or fate decides I need a lottery win, this is where things stand.
I’m not gone, I’m just on the disabled list
