Tonight, I taught a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class at Sherbourne Martial Arts Academy focused on submissions from the scarf hold, which is a variation of side mount.

I taught two near side armlocks (i.e., straight armbar, figure four) and two far side armlocks (i.e., Americana, armbar).

How’s this for a trip down memory lane?

In this picture, my Kung Fu instructor, Master Paul Chau, is literally jumping right over me while executing a flying side kick! And yes, that’s me with the blonde hair!

Since I’m already a black sash in this picture, I’m guessing this was taken around 1994. I would have also been a 2nd Degree Black Belt in Kenpo and a 1st Degree Black Belt in Modern Arnis at the time.

If you take the time to read the article, you’ll also learn that Master Chau was against promoting children to black belt rank, something I’ve long advocated for as well. In my opinion, Master Chau was one of the best Kung Fu instructors in the world, both in his knowledge and his skill. I had tremendous respect for him, and this picture brings back some great memories!

Today, I had the pleasure of participating in one of my favorite BJJ classes of the year!

Taught by BJJ Black Belt Mike Pol, we focused on side control submissions, including the D’Arce choke off the ghost escape, the far-side armbar from knee-on-belly, and the near-side armbar.

We wrapped up the class with some rolling, and I had the honor and privilege of going back-to-back with Kyle and Mike. Both of these guys are incredibly skilled, and getting rounds in with them is always an amazing experience.

Grateful for great training, great instruction, and the opportunity to keep learning and improving!

Great work put in tonight by Shaun Thornhill as prepares for his 2nd Degree Black Belt testing this December.

We reviewed Long Form 4, Striking Set 2, Intercepting the Ram, Marriage of the Rams, Prance of the Tiger, and the extension to Grip of Death.

We had a fantastic time tonight in our weekly online International Black Belt Class!

With representation from Chile, USA, and Canada, in American Kenpo, we covered the first quarter of Long Form 4, along with the base technique and extension of the Kenpo self-defense technique Entangled Wing.

We also worked on a 12-count Espada y Daga drill from Filipino Martial Arts. To make it even more special, I used the very same machete (as the sword) that I used during a demonstration at the Canadian Internationals in April 1990, with Senior Grand Master Ed Parker watching as the featured guest! A great piece of martial arts history to bring into tonight’s training!

Outstanding work by everyone, and thank you all for the phenomenal questions and engaging discussion afterward! It’s always a pleasure to share knowledge, deepen our understanding, and continue growing together through the martial arts.

This is a Kung Fu weapon form that is required for promotion to Purple Belt in the Black Dragon System. I was fortunate to receive my black sash directly under Master Paul Chau, who in my view, is one of the best martial arts masters in Canada.

The name of the form is Donlonge Doon Gwan Yee Lo, which translates to Single Dragon Short Stick 2.

Tuesday night means Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)!

Tonight, I taught a BJJ class at Sherbourne Martial Arts Academy, focusing on side mount controls and submissions.

We covered a series of five side mount control positions, a transition from modified side mount to a high-step mount, and two variations of the Americana armlock: the standard version and the rat trap.

We wrapped things up with two rounds of live rolling.

Great training, great people, and good times on the mats!

Superb work today by Heteng Zhang and Ivan Valdivia!

Heteng spent the entire hour working on Long Form 3 and did an outstanding job.

Ivan worked on the following 3rd Degree and 2nd Degree Brown Belt self-defense techniques:

Courting the Tiger, Gathering of the Snakes, Glancing Lance, Dominating Circles, Destructive Fans, Unfurling Crane, Grasping Eagles, Parting of the Snakes, Thrusting Lance, Blinding Sacrifice, Snakes of Wisdom, Entwined Lance, Falling Falcon, Fatal Cross, Twirling Hammers, Defensive Cross, Dance of Darkness, and Marriage of the Rams.

Total dedication by both!

A great day of training yesterday!

The day started with a BJJ class at Sherbourne Martial Arts Academy focused on side mount maintenance.

Later in the day, Dave Wolfe, Scott Wolfe, and Cheryl Twist worked on continuous and point sparring, Long Form 6, Aggressive Twins, Spreading Branch, and Fatal Deviation.
