Did you know that not every ADHDer or Autistic person identifies as having a disability? Some think having ADHD or Autism is like having a brain with a different way of thinking (a different neurotype, if you will). However, having these differences of experiences within an ADHD or Autism diagnosis really highlights the nuances and contradictions that accompanies these diagnoses. How we perceive the world can be how we perceive ourself and vice versa.

There are many contradictions when it comes to being an ADHDer and how those contradictions impact your life may also colour if you view having ADHD as a disability or not. We love spontaneity but really thrive when we have a routine and definitely have a hard time setting our own routine. We work better with a minimalist look to our workspaces ,but struggle to make these spaces tidy on a regular basis. Sometimes we are good with cleaning a friend’s space, but keeping our own space clean is a real challenge. One big contradiction that puzzles everyone without ADHD is that we have a hard time with keeping focused on ‘boring’ tasks, but can ‘hyperfocus’ and really lock in on activities... and lose hours and hours to chasing dopamine things like video games or TikTok.

Sometimes these contradictions can really impact someone’s life in a negative way. The good news is that there are things we can do to help minimize that impact. We can talk to a medical professional about what medication is right for us. We can find what therapist works best for us. We can seek out an ADHD Coach to help us close that gap between where we are and where we want to be. When you’re ready to commit to making changes in your life, book a complimentary, brief Discovery Session with Melissa @ Working ADHD. You can also text 519.617.4608 or email at [email protected]

Finding the right diagnosis for your mental health symptoms can be challenging! Quite a few mental health issues share some common symptoms with others. Navigating all of this can feel like a second (or third) job all on its own. ADHD is really no different in this respect. ADHD can share traits with Autism, Anxiety, Depression, Bipolar Disorder, and others.

While you aren’t expected to know everything about every mental health diagnosis in order to make one your own self… A bit of education is extremely handy! One of the main things that ADHD and Bipolar Disorder share is the impairment of emotional regulation. Between the two it can be very challenging to piece things apart. Someone with ADHD may look like they have Bipolar Disorder, and vice versa, so it’s crucial to know the differences. Particularly when you are seeking a diagnosis for yourself or a loved one.

Another complicating factor is that ADHD and Bipolar Disorder often co-occur together (are comorbid). Meaning when there is a diagnosis of one, there is often a diagnosis of the other. This can make teasing out either diagnosis particularly challenging for someone who is not trained and capable of diagnosing mental health conditions.

Coaching is just one of a few ways to manage the symptoms of ADHD. It is great as a part of a multi-faceted approach (Medication, behavioural therapy, and more). If you feel like you’re ready to add ADHD Coaching into your approach to managing your ADHD, schedule a complimentary brief Discovery Session and see if you are ready to make changes in order to move towards the life you want.

A common comment an ADHDer will hear after disclosing their diagnosis to a family member or friend is, "Yeah, I think everybody has ADHD. It's so overdiagnosed now!" This conversation rarely goes well for the ADHDer. Often they will leave the conversation realizing they can't be as open as they want to be about who they are. They also feel frustrated that they may not know the statistics on the prevalence of ADHD.

Thankfully ADDitude Magazine has an article that breaks down who really get left behind when it comes to securing answers in the form of an ADHD diagnosis. Not everyone has the ability or means to secure a life changing diagnosis.

ADHD and Neurodiversity in general is layered with complexities. There are strengths with how one copes with it that gets labelled as "Superpowers". Sometimes we even talk about ADHD being a superpower. That narrative can get a bit tricky...
It's important to note that not everyone feels that way, and having ADHD can come with a lot of complications. ADHDers have a hard time engaging in tasks that aren't super interesting to them. That can mean things like hygeine and overall caring for oneself is challenging. It can be hard to acheive your potential in school, no matter what grade you (or your child) is in. Keeping a job long term can also be a challenge. Living an ADHD life is like living a video game life on "hard mode". No matter what age you are.

It doesn't have to be that way. There are treatments and interventions that can help if you talk to your doctor. For non-medical intervention, coaching is also another great way to manage those ADHD symptoms both for the day to day fight and for those long term goals. Melissa at Working ADHD provides virtual coaching that fits you and your life. It doesn't matter if you need coaching because you have ADHD, or if you are trying to help your (young or old) child manage their ADHD life. Coaching is for everyone who's ready and willing to make a change and close the gap from where they are stuck right now, versus where they want to be ideally.

If you're looking for a change with your ADHD (or with just about any challenge), then book a complimentary 20-30 minute Discovery session with Melissa @ Working ADHD. This brief meet and greet allows you to see if Working ADHD is right for you.

Unfortunately, Working ADHD doesn't provide ADHD assessments, but I do offer non-diagnostic career and acheivement related assessments... On top of providing ADHD Coaching!

Demystifying the assessment process is something I'm passionate about. I hear a lot of frustrations surrounding the costs of ADHD assessments and I thought I would break it down. The main question I get is, "Why is ADHD testing SO expensive?" Please look at the slides below to get a better understanding.

Again, we don't provide ADHD testing, but we do provide ADHD Coaching and non-diagnostic career and acheivement testing. Feel free to book a 20 minute complimentary Discovery Call through my Calendly to learn more about the kind of info and services I provide. https://calendly.com/melissa-workingadhd/30min
