I just talked with one of my senior Black Belts and he reminded me how important it is that I tell you as an almost sixty-year-old how proud I am of all of you and how grateful I am that we all trained together as part of our journey.

Regardless of how you feel about me, I will always consider you one of my students and think of you kindly. You are always welcome at my schools and I hope to train with you again one day.

Because of this I am very happy to announce that our school is now GRACIE BARRA MAPLE RIDGE becoming the only school in Maple Ridge offering Authentic Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with our new head coach Raphael Vaz!

Our inaugural event last year was a huge success with more than 100 competitors fighting to determine the Caribbean BJJ Champions. Because of this we made many changes regarding the venue, communication, staff, mat areas and referees to keep up with the growth of the event so make sure to enter again.

Why do we bow? Realistic Martial Arts are not based on rituals but functionality and yet bowing is considered a vital part of BJJ, why? It does not serve any religious or traditional purpose but shows our respect for one another regardless of the outcome of our sparring sessions.

We do not celebrate or despair after a match but thank our partner regardless for allowing us to practice BJJ and learn. This shows our modesty and understanding that it takes good partners that push you hard in training to become good yourself.

It also reminds us that we are not fighters nor athletes but Martial Artist. Ready to face ourselves and our challenges openly rather than to hide our insecurities behind a big ego and macho behaviour.

So, bow with purpose, show respect to everyone in class and by doing so with intent you will grow as a Martial Artists on the mat as well as off the mat.
