But behaviour isn’t always the problem, it’s information.

So often, when a horse shows us unwanted behaviour, our instinct is to stop it, correct it, or fix it. But what if the behaviour is actually information?

On September 16, I’ll be presenting a special live Zoom lecture for The Electric Horseman.

What the Behaviour Is Actually Telling You

During this lecture, we’ll explore what can happen when we look beyond the behaviour itself and begin asking what the horse may actually be communicating.

Because when we better understand what’s behind the behaviour, we can respond with greater clarity, creating deeper connection, more effective training, and lasting change.

A confident horse isn't built by removing pressure. It's built by helping them understand how to work through it.

This month, we're focused on building understanding and confidence, using the early stages of working with a young horse to explore how we introduce pressure, create clarity, and help the horse learn to find the answer.

Rather than simply asking a horse to tolerate something new, we'll look at how thoughtful pressure and release can help them become more capable of thinking, searching, and staying connected when they're unsure.

Throughout the month, we'll explore the difference between lightness and softness, how I introduce pressure through early halter work, and how those same foundations carry forward as we introduce new experiences like the surcingle and tarp.

You'll see why giving the horse room to think and find the release matters, and how familiar patterns can help them make sense of increasingly challenging situations without taking away their responsibility in the process.

By the end of the month, you'll have a deeper understanding of how confidence is developed through the learning process, not by protecting the horse from pressure, but by helping them discover that they can think, search, find softness, and successfully work their way through it.

A huge congratulations to Dan James on being named the 2026 Heart of the Horse C**t Starting Champion. Dan is an incredible horseman, and it was great to see him take home the win. Well deserved!

I was really looking forward to being part of Heart of the Horse this year, and while life had a different plan for me, I enjoyed following along and watching what unfolded.

Events like this are good for our industry. They give us an opportunity to watch, learn, have conversations, and see different approaches to helping a horse find confidence and understanding.

I also want to give a special congratulations and thank you to Nikki for all the work that goes into bringing an event like this together. The time, energy and commitment behind the scenes is enormous.

There are moments in life when you’re reminded just how fortunate you are to have good people standing beside you.

Patrick, thank you.

When I was injured, you didn’t just reach out with kind words, you stepped forward and created something meaningful. You gave your time, knowledge, and energy to bring this horsemanship community together in support of my family and me.

To everyone who rode, audited, shared the clinic, or helped behind the scenes, thank you. The generosity our family has experienced during this season has been incredibly humbling.

At its best, the horse community goes far beyond methods or disciplines. It’s about people showing up for one another and Patrick, you did just that.

I’m excited to open registration for my new Josh Nichol Mentorship Cohort.

For this Founding Cohort, I’m intentionally keeping the experience small.

There are two ways to join me:

Participant — Receive personalized coaching from me using your own training videos, practical homework, and a follow-up review of your progress.

Observer — Join all four live sessions, learn from real coaching conversations, and participate in the live discussions.

This isn’t about giving you another set of techniques to follow.

It’s about helping you become more aware of what your horse is communicating, why it’s happening, and how you can respond with greater feel and understanding.

Registration is officially OPEN for my new Josh Nichol Mentorship Cohort!

I’ve been wanting to create an opportunity where I can work more closely with riders who are ready to deepen their understanding and really explore what’s happening between them and their horse.

That’s what this mentorship is about.

For this Founding Cohort, I’m intentionally keeping the group small so we can create a personal and meaningful learning experience.

There are two ways you can join me:

PARTICIPANT
You’ll have the opportunity to receive personalized coaching from me using your own training videos. I’ll give you practical homework to work through with your horse, and we’ll follow up together to look at what changed and where we can take things next.

OBSERVER
You can join all four live online sessions, learn alongside the participants through their coaching conversations, and take part in our LIVE discussions.

My hope with this mentorship is to help you move beyond simply looking for another technique or exercise.
