Protecting Our Marine Resources | Guardians on Patrol

A recent enforcement action highlights the importance of protecting endangered northern abalone in our waters. Thanks to the vigilance of the Metlakatla Guardians and their collaboration with Fisheries and Oceans Canada, 10 live northern abalone were recovered and safely returned to the ocean.

Northern abalone have been protected from harvest since 1990 and remain listed as an endangered species. Illegal harvesting continues to be one of the greatest threats to their recovery and long-term survival.

We would like to thank our Metlakatla Guardians for their ongoing stewardship, monitoring, and protection of our marine resources for future generations.

A British Columbia man has been fined $7,500 after being caught in the possession of endangered northern abalone — a kind of mollusk that's been covered by a harvesting ban since 1990.

On October 14th, players from the Prince Rupert Minor Hockey Association rolled up their sleeves and got to work supporting Metlakatla Development Corporation, helping move boxes of files from an existing storage area to their new building at grassy bay.
In return, Metlakatla Development Corporation generously presented the team with a sponsorship cheque to help support tournament fees and travel expenses this season.
