What Affects Glycemic Load? 🍌🥗

When it comes to blood sugar, it’s not just what carbohydrate you eat—it’s also how much, how ripe, how it’s prepared, and how processed it is.

Here are 4 key factors that can influence glycemic load:

🥣 SERVING SIZE
The larger the portion of carbohydrate, the greater the potential impact on glycemic load.

🍌 RIPENESS
As fruit ripens, its carbohydrate structure changes. For example, a ripe yellow banana generally has a greater blood-sugar impact than a less-ripe green banana.

🔥 COOKING METHODS
Cooking can affect how quickly carbohydrates are digested. Longer cooking and some high-heat methods can increase the glycemic response, while gentler cooking and avoiding overcooking may help keep it lower.

🌾 FOOD PROCESSING
Highly refined carbohydrates, such as white flour products, are generally digested more quickly than whole or minimally processed carbohydrate sources.

✨ You don’t have to fear carbohydrates—you need to understand them.

Choosing whole foods, being mindful of portions, pairing carbohydrates with protein, healthy fats and fibre, and focusing on minimally processed foods can all support more balanced blood sugar and sustained energy.

Small choices can make a BIG difference in your health and wellness—especially as we age. 💚

NOT ALL BODY FAT IS THE SAME… and understanding this could completely change how you approach your health.

Many women think body fat is simply about weight gain or loss.

But here’s what most people don’t realize: there are different types of body fat—and each one affects your body differently.

Let’s break it down:

✨ WHITE FAT (White Adipose Tissue)
This is the most common fat in adults.
Its job? To store energy for later use.

You’ll find it:
✔ Under the skin
✔ Around organs

In healthy amounts, white fat is normal and necessary.
Too much, however, can increase the risk of metabolic issues and chronic disease.

🔥 BROWN FAT (Brown Adipose Tissue)
This is your body’s metabolic helper.

Unlike white fat, brown fat actually burns calories to create heat.

You’ll find it mostly around:
✔ Neck
✔ Shoulders

Brown fat becomes more active in colder temperatures and may help support metabolism.

⚠️ VISCERAL FAT (Deep Belly Fat)
This is the one we want to pay close attention to.

Visceral fat sits deep inside the abdomen, surrounding your internal organs.

Why does it matter?

Because excess visceral fat is strongly linked to:
❌ Insulin resistance
❌ Increased inflammation
❌ Hormonal imbalance
❌ Higher risk of heart disease & type 2 diabetes

Here’s the key:

➡️ White fat stores energy
➡️ Brown fat burns energy
➡️ Visceral fat can harm your health

And this is why the scale doesn’t tell the whole story.

You can be focused on “losing weight,” but what really matters is improving body composition and metabolic health.

So what can you do?

✔ Strength train to build lean muscle and reduce visceral fat
✔ Incorporate HIIT to target stubborn deep belly fat
✔ Eat balanced meals with protein, fiber, and healthy fats to reduce inflammation
✔ Prioritize sleep because poor sleep disrupts hormones and fat storage

Your goal shouldn’t just be to weigh less.

Your goal should be to build a body that is stronger, healthier, and metabolically resilient.

🥑 EATING FAT DOESN’T MAKE YOU FAT!!!

Let’s clear up one of the biggest nutrition myths that just won’t go away.

For years, women were told to avoid fat if they wanted to lose weight. Low-fat everything became the norm. But the truth is…

✨ Fat is NOT the enemy.

Weight gain happens when we consistently consume more calories than our body needs — regardless of whether those calories come from fat, carbs, or protein.

In fact, healthy fats are essential for your health and your fat-loss journey.

💛 Healthy fats help support:
✔ Hormone balance (especially important during perimenopause and menopause)
✔ Brain function and mental clarity
✔ Absorption of vitamins A, D, E & K
✔ Stable blood sugar levels
✔ Feeling satisfied after meals
✔ Healthy cells throughout the body

So don’t fear foods like:
🥑 Avocados
🥜 Nuts & seeds
🫒 Olive oil
🐟 Fatty fish like salmon and sardines
🥚 Eggs
🥥 Coconut oil

If eating fat doesn’t make you fat, what actually contributes to fat gain?

➡️ Consistently overeating calories
➡️ Blood sugar spikes from highly processed foods
➡️ Chronic stress and elevated cortisol
➡️ Poor sleep that disrupts hunger hormones
➡️ Lack of movement

My favourite simple nutrition strategy?

✨ Complete in 3 ✨

At every meal include:
🥩 Protein
🥑 Healthy Fat
🥦 Fiber

This powerful combination helps balance blood sugar, control cravings, keep you full longer, and support sustainable fat loss.

Stop fearing healthy fats.
Start nourishing your body with the nutrients it needs to thrive. 💛

👇 What’s your favourite healthy fat? Mine is avocado! 🥑

✨ 4 Lifestyle Habits That Truly Support Gut Healing ✨
(And no, it’s not just about what you eat 👀)

If you’re dealing with bloating, inflammation, hormone imbalance, or stubborn digestive issues — your daily habits matter just as much as food.

Here’s where to start ⬇️

🧘🏻‍♀️ 1. Manage Stress

Chronic stress can increase intestinal permeability (aka leaky gut).
When stress stays high, healing slows.
Simple practices like breathwork, journaling, meditation, yoga, or time in nature help calm the nervous system and support gut repair.

🥩🥦🥔 2. Practice Mindful Eating

Digestion works best in a parasympathetic “rest & digest” state.
Slowing down, chewing well, and eating without distractions signals safety to your body — allowing enzymes and stomach acid to do their job.

🏋🏻‍♀️ 3. Move Your Body (But Don’t Overdo It)

Movement improves microbiome diversity, boosts short-chain fatty acid production, and strengthens the gut lining.
But too much high-intensity exercise can actually stress the gut.
Think: supportive, not punishing.

😴 4. Optimize Sleep

Sleep is when your gut repairs. Poor sleep disrupts your microbiome and raises stress hormones — both enemies of gut healing.
Aim for 7–9 hours of quality, consistent sleep.

💡 Gut healing is a lifestyle, not a quick fix.

Small daily choices add up to powerful change.

✨ Leaky Gut Isn’t Just a Gut Issue — It’s a Whole-Body Signal✨

Bloating, fatigue, skin flare-ups, stubborn inflammation, hormone imbalances, or unexplained food sensitivities?
Your gut may be asking for support.

Leaky gut (increased intestinal permeability) happens when the gut lining becomes compromised, allowing particles to pass into the bloodstream — triggering inflammation and immune stress.

💫 Why work with a Holistic Nutritionist?

Because healing the gut isn’t about quick fixes — it’s about root causes.

A holistic nutritionist helps you:
✔️ Identify food triggers & nutrient deficiencies
✔️ Support digestion, liver detox & hormone balance
✔️ Reduce inflammation naturally
✔️ Rebuild the gut lining with targeted nutrition
✔️ Create a sustainable, personalized plan — not a one-size-fits-all diet

✨ When your gut heals, everything benefits:
Energy. Mood. Skin. Metabolism. Hormones. Immunity.

The real flex? Feeling strong from the inside out! 💪💕
