Dear Members,
The Executive Committee of the Canadian Optimist Dinghy Association (CODA) informs the membership that it has reached a difficult decision with the organizing committee at the Chester Yacht Club concerning the 2021 Canadian Optimist Dinghy Championship. At this time, with interprovincial travel restrictions in effect, it is the conclusion of all parties involved that it will not be possible to hold the Championship, as scheduled, at the end of August. CODA therefore officially announces the cancellation for the 2021 edition.
As the Championship is the sole official qualifying process for the IODA World and Continental Championships and the last qualification is now two years-old (2019 Championship in Ottawa), CODA is well aware that an alternative process must be put in place for the 2022 season. After careful consideration, CODA hopes to hold a National Spring Qualifier in early 2022. The location and the dates of the event remain to be determined at this time.
Finally, as the CODA’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) is generally held in conjunction with the Championship, the AGM will not be held in person again this year. CODA will therefore hold a virtual meeting as it did for its 2020 edition.
The CODA Executive is aware of the disappointment this announcement makes. It wishes to remind its members that, depending on provincial health guidelines, local, regional and provincial events and clinics will go ahead this summer. CODA encourages sailors to remain active and participate in them. It will endeavour to advertise them on its website and social media platforms.
Sincerely,
Canadian Optimist Dinghy Association

Chers membres,

calling all opti sailors! do you know all the parts?
Who knows?
Who knows what the daggerboard is on an opti?
Just in front of a bulkhead, which partitions the boat nearly in half, is the daggerboard case. While other types of centreboard may pivot to retract, a daggerboard slides in this case.
The shape of the daggerboard converts the forward motion into a windward lift, countering the leeward push of the sail. The theoretical centre of lateral resistance is on the trailing edge of the daggerboard.
