L’explosion du bar rayé menace l’équilibre

Autrefois en déclin, le bar rayé a fait un retour spectaculaire dans l’estuaire de la Miramichi, passant de quelques milliers dans les années 1990 à plus de 500 000 aujourd’hui. Cette croissance fulgurante a de graves conséquences pour le saumon atlantique, dont les retours de l’océan vers la rivière Miramichi ont atteint un creux historique en 2024.

Prédateurs agressifs, les bars rayés se nourrissent volontiers de jeunes saumons — appelés smolts. Au début des années 2000, jusqu’à 75 % des smolts survivaient à leur migration vers l’océan. Aujourd’hui, ce taux a chuté à seulement 5 % dans certaines zones, surtout depuis que la période de frai du bar coïncide avec la descente des smolts au printemps.

Le saumon est une espèce emblématique du Nouveau-Brunswick, au cœur des cultures autochtones et du patrimoine de la pêche sportive. Son déclin menace non seulement un écosystème, mais aussi un mode de vie.

La Atlantic Salmon Federation et ses partenaires pressent Pêches et Océans Canada d’agir avec plus de vigueur, en appuyant une pêche commerciale autochtone au bar rayé et en assouplissant la réglementation pour la pêche récréative afin de rétablir l’équilibre.

La semaine prochaine, nous partons en tournée avec le film documentaire Scale of Change à travers la Nouvelle-Écosse, le Nouveau-Brunswick et la Gaspésie pour sensibiliser et mobiliser le public. Il est temps d’agir. Ensemble, nous pouvons sauver le saumon atlantique.

Striped Bass Boom Threatens Balance

Once threatened, striped bass have rebounded dramatically in the Miramichi estuary, growing from a few thousand in the 1990s to over half a million today. This explosion has brought serious consequences for Atlantic salmon, whose returns from the ocean to the Miramichi River have hit record lows in 2024.

Striped bass are aggressive predators, and young salmon—or smolt—are a favourite food. In the early 2000s, up to 75% of smolt survived their journey to the ocean. Now, that number has dropped to just 5% in some areas, especially as bass spawning coincides with the salmon's out-migration in late spring.

Salmon are iconic to New Brunswick, central to both Indigenous culture and the region’s angling heritage. Their decline threatens not just an ecosystem, but a way of life.

Atlantic Salmon Federation and their partners are pushing Fisheries and Oceans Canada to take stronger action, supporting a First Nations commercial bass fishery and easing regulations for recreational fishing to restore balance.

We’re taking the message on the road next week with the Scale Of Change documentary film across Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Gaspésie to raise awareness and rally support. It’s time to act. Together, we can help save the Atlantic salmon.
