🎙️ Part 3 — The story of the first air step, told by Frankie Manning ❤️

Frankie continues to share when he and Frieda Washington were at the Savoy Ballroom, competing against Shorty George Snowden’s teams — and they were last in the lineup.

The band, led by Chick Webb, had been playing Christopher Columbus for the dancers before them. But for reasons Frankie said he never fully understood, Chick asked him what song he wanted to dance to!

Frankie turned to Frieda — she wasn’t sure — so he chose “Down South Camp Meeting.” 🎶

Then came the moment. A powerful, swinging performance… and the very first air step - the Over-the-Back - thrown in front of a stunned crowd.

When Frieda landed, the ballroom went silent for a split second and then burst in cheers!

And just like that, they helped spark a whole new era of air steps in Lindy Hop, inspiring generations to come. ❤️

The original dancers, the pioneers, the people who despite their struggles and through it all created such a magical, meaningful, expressive dance… We can’t be more grateful and appreciative.

As they prepared for the big contest at the Savoy Ballroom, going up against Shorty George Snowden’s team, Frankie shares how he came up with the idea for the “over-the-back”, and how he carefully experimented with a mattress to protect his partner, Frieda Washington, while figuring it out.
