7 IMPORTANT TIPS FOR WEANING THAT YOU SHOULD TRY ...
BY FAWN WAGNER

If you made the decision to breastfeed like I did, at some point you will have to wean your little one, which, tough as it may be, can be made easier with these 7 important tips for weaning. Remember, keep your wits, stay patient and in the end, your baby will be weaned without any problems. Here are my tips for weaning to try, and make your weaning experience a little more manageable.

1. KEEP YOUR LITTLE ONE BUSY

For about a week after you’ve started the process of weaning, keep your little one busy as much as you can. It will be a lot easier to wean if your baby is distracted and not climbing all over you to nurse. I spent a few days running errands I had been putting off, then I spent a few days in the park, swinging and pushing my baby down the slide. When we were at home I played a billion games of patty cake and sang and danced to as many silly songs I could think of. When it comes to weaning, distraction is your best friend, which is why it's earned the top spot on my list of tips for weaning.
2. GO SLOWLY

If you can help it at all, go slowly; don’t stop nursing all at once. Take one feeding a day away from week to week and save night time feedings for last (those are mostly for comfort beyond the first year). I took one feeding a day away for 3 weeks and when it came to night time it was one feeding every two weeks. There was a lot less crying and screaming this way.
3. BE AFFECTIONATE

Once your baby starts eating solid foods nursing becomes less about food and more about comfort, so when starting the weaning process, be extra affectionate. Let your baby know that even without nursing he can receive comfort from you. Give lots of kisses and lots of hugs... remember this is a transitional period for both you and your baby.
4. PROVIDE ALTERNATIVES

I never denied my son his b**b juice when he was really insistent but I always provided an alternative first. If your baby starts going in to nurse, offer a sippy cup, a snack, or a bottle, anything that will give your baby what she wants without nursing.
5. AVOID NURSING POSITIONS

If you sit or hold your baby a certain way when you nurse, try to avoid that position when you’re weaning. After a certain amount of time nursing that way, your baby will associate that with nursing. After you’ve weaned you can go right back to cuddling your baby normally.
6. CHANGE YOUR BABY’S ROUTINE

Now to some of you this may seem a little odd but I don’t mean that you have to change any times that your baby does any certain things. Just tweak everything a little to cut out nursing. For instance, my son always had a bath, a story and then got nursed to sleep. So, we started giving him his bath after dinner then he got a bath, a little baby massage, a story and we would relax on the couch with a bottle until he was ready to lay down in his crib. Nothing was changed too much but we cut out nursing and made sure that he had a full tummy before bed.
7. LET YOUR BABY LEAD

Once again this is an "if you can help it" tip. If you have to stop nursing because you’re going back to work or school, that’s not something that you can really help. BUT, that being said, if it can be helped you should let your baby lead. My son started to wean by himself and I took that as my cue that he was ready. Your baby will let you know when he or she is ready by cutting out a feeding or two.

Weaning can be a hard task but if you put in the time and follow these tips, weaning can be a simple process that will give you and your baby a little bit more independence! These tips worked for me over a period of a couple months but everyone has their own method and pace. What methods did you use to wean your baby? Let me know down below!

7 TIPS ON HOW TO BE A GOOD LISTENER ...
BY CORINA DONDAS

I hope this article will help you enrich the quality of your close relationships, because I would like to give you a few tips on how to be a good listener. One of the things that I always wished for, was to be a nice person, always surrounded by a lot of friends, family and people who love me and I could say I managed that mostly by being a good listener and by showing empathy and care towards other people’s needs. Most people spend almost 70% of their time by being engaged in different forms of communication, and, like me, I’m pretty sure that you’re one of them. That’s why I decided to show you a few simple tips on how to be a good listener, things that may help you improve the quality of your daily interactions.

1. USE REPHRASING

One of the most important and most easy tips I could give on how to be a good listener is to encourage you to use rephrasing as often as you can. It’s such a powerful tool for creating a good relationship with anyone! Rephrasing actually means saying what the other person has just told you, by using different words and in a very concise manner, in order to show the other one that you are really interested in understanding their point of view and that their opinion is extremely important to you. By using this technique, you should pay very close attention not to add certain aspects that do not match with what you were told by the person with whom you were having that conversation. The easier the other person will see himself/herself in what you are saying, the more he or she will have the feeling that you are really listening and you really understand what they are telling you.
2. REDEFINE THINGS!

By giving new meanings to the things you hear or see (because I’m sure you all know that non-verbal communication is as important as the verbal one and sometimes even more), you could show people that perception is a subjective matter and that everyone sees things differently. So, every time somebody tells you that only bad things happen to them, try to find out what these bad things are, and then, try to redefine them, to give them new meanings; maybe the other person didn’t even suspected that there could be a bright side to his or her problems.
3. ALWAYS TRY TO ASK A FEW MORE QUESTIONS

In order to really understand what people tell you, you should always be prepared to ask a few extra questions. By doing this, you will seem much more interested in what the other person is telling you about, and also, it will help understand better the things you are told. So, be curious and don’t be afraid to ask some questions if certain aspects are still unclear to you! I’m sure that your conversational partner will appreciate you even more for showing empathy and interest in what he or she is saying. It will also make them feel important, and I know that everybody likes to feel that way.
4. TRY TO PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT THE OTHER PERSON IS TELLING YOU

You should always remember that every time you get involved in a verbal or non-verbal dialogue with someone, you should always focus your entire attention on them and on what they are trying to communicate you. Don’t let other things distract you, no matter how tempting they may seem at the time! Just think that if you do this (get distracted I mean), and you’re not paying close attention to your interlocutor, he or she will feel disrespected, misunderstood or even hurt. So, try to always pay attention to other people’s feelings and focus on what they’re saying, in order to become a better listener.
5. TRY TO RESIST THE TEMPTATION TO CONTRADICT THE OTHER PERSON

I know that it can happen to you quite frequently that the person you’re talking with would say something that you totally disagree with. I’m sure that you’d be tempted to prove them wrong and to convince them that your point of view in the correct one. You should try to fight this temptation, and first of all, you should try to find out all the elements, details and the context of what the other one tells you about. If you contradict a person too quickly, without having all the information, you may be wrong and also, you will hurt that person’s feelings. Try not to hurry and don’t be hasty!
6. PAY ATTENTION TO THE NON-VERBAL ASPECTS OF COMMUNICATION

Studies show that 75% of the communication is non-verbal and that is why you should always pay attention to all the aspects involved in the conversation, especially to the non-verbal ones. People can tell you so much without even saying a word! You should learn to use the non-verbal way of communicating in your advantage, first by understanding better what the other one is saying, and second, by expressing in a more convincing and of course, assertive manner what you are thinking.
7. TRY NOT TO THINK THAT WHAT YOU ARE LISTENING TO IS BORING

A good tip for you to become a good listener would be to never think that what the other person in telling you is such a boring thing, and never, under any circumstances do not show that you are thinking this way. Usually, most of the creative people are always paying attention to others, because they’re always looking for new things to learn, to understand, to explore. Although, many conversations may seem pretty boring, try not to change the subject until you make sure that there isn’t anything for you to learn from that conversation; you may be surprised.

I hope that the tips I gave you will help you understand better why certain people behave the way they do and why do they say certain things. Now, I would like to know what other tips for being a good listener do you know and of course, do you use? Have they paid off? Do tell!

7 BEST WAYS TO BALANCE YOUR HORMONES NATURALLY ...
BY JESSICA GROVER

Knowing the ways to balance your hormones is vital in living a day full of mental peace and physical well being. Hormones play such a key role in how we operate. It affects our skin, sleep patterns, weight, reproductive health, our mood and energy levels. Here are just a few ways to balance your hormones naturally!
1. SLEEP MORE

Sleep is when the body repairs itself and one of the best ways to balance your hormones.Without adequate sleep, our bodies begin to shut down and everyday functioning becomes a challenge! All sources recommend 7-9 hours of sleep a night for the average adult. Less than that can create many issues- including disrupting our endocrine system!
2. STRESS LESS

When stress levels spike, our body doesn't know how to respond because we are not activity engaging ourselves to relax in response to an increased heart rate and adrenaline. So, a hormone called cortisol is secreted by the adrenal gland in excess. A perpetual state of stress, even minimal, is chronic stress. According to an article by Elizabeth Scott, M.D. on About.com, the excess cortisol over time can cause high blood pressure, a thyroid imbalance, bone density loss, hyperglycemia, weight gain, etc. Learn how to cope with stress, perhaps by breathing techniques or a mantra, to allow your body to relax quickly after a stressful moment!
3. EXERCISE

Regular exercise, light to moderate, allows the body to expend energy but not too much. This also aids in better, more restful sleep at night. Make sure not to overdue it on the activity level because, according to Wellness Mama, it can actually cause more aggravation of a hormone imbalance, at least initially. So, stick to light to moderate workouts to balance those hormones!
4. HEALTHY DIET

When dealing with a hormone imbalance, it's best to stick to clean eating to avoid toxic build up which can reek havoc on the endocrine system. Natural fats are essential, like avocado and coconut oil. Eat whole, raw foods as much as possible. Especially foods that are dense in vitamins and minerals like leafy greens, sweet potatoes, and blueberries. It's always best to access your essential nutrients from whole foods rather than supplements!
5. LESS CAFFEINE

I am a coffee addict so this one is hard for me! It's true however, caffeine is a stimulant, which overproduces hormones into our systems. So, cut back on your caffeine intake as much as possible!
6. MORE VITAMIN D

Living in the northwest where we see sun only 2-3 months out of the year, myself and others in the area seriously lack vitamin D, which is required for B12 absorption. This plays a huge impact on hormone and thus energy levels! If you can't enjoy the sunshine naturally, make sure to take a vitamin D and B12 supplement when needed!
7. VITAMIN AND MINERAL SUPPLEMENTS

Our body requires a certain amount of vitamins and minerals from food to function properly. When there's a deficiency, it manifests in various ways related to hormone imbalances. Taking a multivitamin is not a substitute for whole food nutrition, but it does help in giving your body what it needs.

These are just some of the ways to balance our hormones naturally! The natural route is best for prolonged health if you're not dealing with severe medical issues. And in reality, our lives would be better doing these things anyway! Do you have any experience with different techniques used to balance your hormones naturally?

7 REASONS BEHIND YOUR CRAVINGS THAT YOU SHOULD BE AWARE OF ...
BY TARA ZIMLIKI

Have you ever wondered what the reasons behind your cravings are? Maybe you craved chocolate all day long and nothing could bring your mind away from this. Did you question why you had this intense craving? You feel like, if you give into the chocolate, you will be sabotaging your diet. We have all given into our food cravings at some point or another and usually regret this later. Giving into a food craving is allowing your mind to take over by giving your body what it does not need, at least in that large of a quantity. Food cravings occur when your mind is confused in what your body really needs. Here are some of the reasons behind your cravings.

1. WHY AM I CRAVING CHOCOLATE?

Studies show that when you are craving chocolate, you need a mood boost and you are actually craving a release of serotonin, which is released when eating chocolate. After the sugar high you receive from the chocolate, you will have a sugar crash and often a mood surge. So serotonin is one of the reasons behind your cravings. That explains a lot, right?
2. WHY AM I CRAVING CHIPS?

When you crave salt, you are actually usually deficient in minerals. People that are deficient in calcium crave salty food more than those that are not deficient. Why? Salt tricks the body into believing calcium levels are increasing when they are not. Those who are iron deficient also tend to crave salt. The recommended daily allowance for salt is just 1500 mg a day, so aim to stay below this and become more conscious of these cravings!
3. ARE YOU DIETING?

Often people that are on restrictive diets tend to have the most cravings. Why? If you forbid yourself of something, you will usually only want it more. The solution is to eat food in moderation and avoid a highly restrictive diet. A healthy lifestyle that includes eating protein, whole grains, veggies and fruits is the best way to live, and the best part is that you will not be on a diet!
4. WHAT DOES YOUR BODY NEED?

Cravings often occur because your body is depleted or deficient in something else. Carbohydrate cravings often occur when your blood glucose levels drop. Eat mini meals throughout the day so you do not have sugar highs and lows. This will help to regulate your sugar and even drop a few pounds!
5. IS THIS A BAD HABIT?

Maybe you grew up eating a snack while watching a movie and now as an adult, you have these same cravings due to habit. Or maybe you are so conditioned by the fast food commercials that simply driving by a fast food chain causes you to salivate. Whatever the reason, make new habits like a walk after dinner or a lunch time jog. Make new healthy habits to fit into your bettered lifestyle!
6. IS THIS OUT OF EMOTION?

Emotions are often the root of the majority of your cravings because emotions can take a strong hold of you. If you find you crave chocolate every time you have a fight with your significant other, this is no coincidence. This is a comfort snack for you. Do not give into the emotion and get out for a workout! The surge of post-workout energy and great health are totally worth it!
7. WHY DO WE CRAVE HIGH FAT FOODS AND NOT CARROT STICKS?

If you fast and wait long periods in between meals, you will find you have cravings for high fat foods. Why? High fat foods provide high calories and a deficient body craves adequate calories to compensate. Your solution is to eat a piece or fruit and a piece of cheese to give your body vitamins and protein.

Now that you are aware of some reasons behind your cravings, you should be more conscious of what you are eating and why. Always think before you eat. What are your cravings? If you are a woman and you crave chocolate “certain” times of the month, you are not alone. Share your cravings and if you have a solution food, what is it?

Being a huge Harry Potter fan, I love learning about all of the fun facts about the Harry Potter movies. They have been a huge part of my life, but I sometimes forget about all of the work that has gone into making these incredible movies. The actors were mainly children, and they were not afraid to pull some pranks on set. Some of the production took hours to create the magic you see on screen. Here of some of my personal favorite fun facts about the Harry Potter movies.

1. ADULT LEARNERS

One of the most surprising fun facts about the Harry Potter movies is the age of the actress who played Moaning Myrtle. Shirley Henderson, who portrayed Moaning Myrtle in the movies, was 37 when she first appeared in “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.” That makes her 24 years older than her costar Daniel Radcliffe, and the oldest actress to portray a Hogwarts student.

2. SNAPE'S SPOILERS

Unlike most actors, Alan Rickman knew the fate of his character the entire time. Before the last book’s release, J.K. Rowling told him details of his character that had not been released. This was to help him better portray Snape with a full idea of his back-story. Looking back on the previous movies, you can tell the influence these details had on Rickman’s performance.

3. UNCONVENTIONAL AUDITION

While there have been some pretty hilarious stories of auditions for movies, not many can top Rupert Grint’s audition for Ron Weasley. He dressed up as his female drama teacher and started rapping for the directors. He first line started off, “Hello my name is Rupert Grint, I hope you don’t think I stink.” Talk about creativity. His bold choice of audition material eventually paid off, as he obviously landed the role that changed his life forever.

4. BAD NEWS BEARD

Hagrid might be known for his giant stature, but his beard might have been the most interesting part of his costume. During filming, Robbie Coltrane had gotten a mini-fan and a fruit bat stuck in his signature beard. I wonder how the costume crew dealt with that predicament?

5. SEWN SHUT

Tom Felton’s character, Draco Malfoy, was known as the bad boy of the movies, but Felton had his own baddy streak behind the scenes. He was known for constantly sneaking food onto the set - so much so that the costume department had to sew his robe pockets shut so that he couldn’t sneak any more food on set.

6. EXTRA CREDIT

During the filming of “The Prisoner of Azkaban,” director Alfonso Cuarón had the Daniel, Emma, and Rupert all write essays about their characters. I guess they wanted to really get in touch with their characters because Emma wrote a 16-page essay, Daniel wrote a 1-page essay, and Rupert never turned his in. Talk about staying in character.

7. WEASLEY TWIN RETAKES

This might be one of my favorite fun facts about the Harry Potter movies. During an interview, James and Oliver Phelps, who play Fred and George Weasley, have admitted to trading places during a few of the scenes. The switch up wasn’t caught until it hit the editing table, so the actors had to go back and re-shoot a handful of scenes. I guess the Phelps twins are just as big pranksters as their characters.

8. MOVIE MAGIC

Rather than use special effects to make Hagrid look like a giant, the producers created two separate sets for many of the scenes Hagrid was in. For example, they had two separate huts; one was a larger size to make Harry, Hermione, and Ron look tiny, and then another, smaller set was used to make Hagrid look larger in comparison to everything else. It is amazing what some set production magic can do to the audience.

9. SORRY TWILIGHT

There has been a long-standing rivalry between “Twilight” and “Harry Potter” fans, but I am here to put that feud to an end. The least successful Harry Potter film, “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,” made $90 million more than the most successful Twilight film. Sorry, Edward and Bella; you are no match for Harry, Ron, and Hermione.

Having the movies be such a huge part of my life, these fun facts made me smile. I love that the kids played pranks, the amount of magic that went into production, and the fact that Harry Potter was more successful than Twilight (sorry, Twihards). What did you think of these fun facts about the Harry Potter movies? Do you know any other fun facts about the movies?

7 AMAZING THINGS YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT ORCHIDS ...
BY HEATHER WILLIAMS

My favorite flowers in the world are orchids, and if you’re a lady who loves orchids, chances are there are things you didn't know about orchids that can give you a new appreciation for this exotic flower. I used to work as a florist and was amazed by how many orchids I used to sell. Apparently, I wasn’t the only one with the infatuation. Orchids are one of the most common flowers associated with love outside of roses, and more commonly associated with s*x and romance than any other flower besides roses due to their aphrodisiac properties. Check out these things you didn't know about orchids so you can take care of them properly and appreciate their exotic, unique qualities.

1. THERE ARE PLENTY TO CHOOSE FROM

Most orchids sold here in the U.S. are one certain breed of orchids, yet there are actually 25,000 documented species of orchids and new ones are being discovered daily. These orchids originate and grow in tropical areas of the world and many horticulturalists hybridize the flower to create a new species that wouldn’t exist in nature. I sure would love to get my hands on some of these gems, wouldn't you?
2. THEY LOVE THE RIGHT LIGHT

If you get an orchid and it dies too quickly, one of the first things you should do is make sure it is in the right sunlight. Orchids do not like direct light or heat. They like indirect light in a window that gets Eastern morning sunlight. This can be tricky, but your orchid will thrive in the right sunlight, so be sure to pay this close attention if bringing one home. When placed in the right spot, they will thrive and be effortless to care for.
3. THEY DON’T LIKE TOO MUCH WATER

One common complaint I got from customers as a florist was that their orchid died on them the same week they bought it. I always asked them first how much water they were giving it and usually they were dousing it with water, practically drowning the poor thing! On a general basis, my advice for watering orchids is a creative one, but one that works. DO NOT pour water directly on your orchid and do not water it everyday. Instead, fill a spray bottle with water and spritz water onto the roots of the leaves, not on the leaves, of the orchid. A good, even round of five to six spritzes should do. Then leave it alone for a week in the recommended area above for light. It will thrive and last for months this way. You can also place 4 ice cubes right under the leaves as another method, once a week. This gives it a slow watering and doesn't drown it either.
4. THEIR BLOOMS DIE AND COME BACK

Orchids usually have a bloom life of six month spurts. When all the leaves have fallen off, simply cut the flower back all the way to the part of the stem where the first bloom started. This looks like a little piece sticking off the limb that is known as the “node.” Then place the orchids back in a pot with drainage holes, and they will regrow within a year and get even bigger with time. Orchids can live up to 100 years when properly taken care of this way.
5. THEY VARY IN SIZE

Orchids can be as big as several hundred pounds (yes, I know!), or as small as the size of a dime. It all depends on the breed, the climate, and the overall environment they are brought up in.
6. THEY PRODUCE VANILLA BEANS

Did you know the commercial orchid breed, the vanilla orchid, is also the breed that produces the exotic vanilla bean? I always knew I loved vanilla for a reason! When I found out the orchid produced it, I wasn’t surprised, seeing as how I’m in love with both of them and, as a bonus, vanilla and orchids are both aphrodisiacs. The popular version of orchids sold here in the United States, known as the Phalaenopsis, will not produce vanilla beans if you're wondering, which is such a shame, I know!
7. THEY ARE THE SMALLEST SEEDS

Of all flowers, orchids have the tiniest seeds in the world, with 3 million seeds in one single orchid pod. What an amazing flower! This fact makes them harder to grow and cultivate than many other flowers in a variety of environments.

For Valentine’s Day, orchids were consistently the number one plant sold above all other plants, only being surpassed by bouquets of roses. I suppose even men who know nothing about flowers, or know tons about flowers, all recognize that orchids are one beautiful, exotic plant to be loved and adored. Do you like orchids or know any fun tips for caring for them?
