Ustad Bhana Ram Ji (1906–1999), the legendary dholi whose beats ignited Bhangra, and the visionary Manohar Deepak family (Manohar, Avtar, and Gurbachan), who brought free-form Bhangra to the world stage in the 1950s, left an indelible mark on the art form.

Bhana Ram hailed from the district of Shekhupura, where, before Partition, he was a disciple of Mohammad Ali. At Partition, Bhana Ram moved to the Jawaharnagar refugee camp in Ludhiana before settling in the town of Sunam—the birthplace of the PEPSU Bhangra team.

Originating from Sunam, the Deepak family collaborated with Bhana Ram and other artists, such as the Bazigar clan, to blend traditional Bhangra moves with other Punjabi folk dances like Luddi, Jhummar, and Dhamaal. Their efforts were patronized by the Maharaja of Patiala, who requested a formal Bhangra performance in 1953, marking a turning point for its recognition.

Sharing clips from movie Naya daur (1958), featuring Bhana Ram Ji and Manohar deepak Ji.
