Mobility gives goalies access to positions. Strength gives them the ability to control those positions. Both are non-negotiable.
Mobility without control is a liability. Control without mobility is a ceiling.

FTC Tuesday Tip: Lateral Touch

The term lateral touch refers to a goalie’s ability to deliver the right amount of lateral distance the moment demands.

Goalies that lack lateral touch tend to overflow and overplay many situations because of too much distance.

Goalies must have power, but they must also have finesse. This balance applies to lateral movement to consistently deliver powerful, center-net positions.

When training lateral technique – especially the butterfly slide – the goalie wants to train different distances to ensure that lateral touch is established in their game.

Here’s the rule of thumb. All butterfly slides have the same technique, regardless of distance, it is the power applied to the push that determines the distance traveled.

As noted, goalies want to be effective covering big distance where explosiveness is required. At the same time, they want to be accurate in covering smaller distances when finesse is needed.

Episode 2 of FTC Impact is live on Inside Edge. 🎬

Curtis McElhinney, former NHL goaltender and current Director of Goaltending with the Toronto Maple Leafs, breaks down why every goaltender needs a personalized system of play, and why the game’s continued evolution demands it.

“There’s not one set way, but there is still an importance in designing that system unique to each goaltender that will allow them to have success.”

A goalie's core is far more than abs. It's the foundation on which everything else is built. Balance, positioning, rotation, force transfer, and body control.

Without that foundation, movement becomes inefficient, positions break down under pressure, and energy leaks out of every rep.

FTC Tuesday Tip: Balanced Lateral Deployment

Goalies have five primary lateral moves in their repertoire.

Each plays a distinct role, and goalies want to develop and deploy the full gamut in their games.

On the feet, the goalie has two primary moves. The T-push for wider moves and the shuffle for narrower, refining moves.

On the knees the goalie has two primary moves. The backside push for wider moves and the knee shuffle for narrower, refining moves.

Lastly, the goalie has their transition move to support transitions from the feet to the knees. The butterfly slide.

On the feet, the goalie must balance deployment of their two key moves. A great developmental rule-of-thumb is to T-push on passes and shuffle during stick handling moments.

Goaltending isn't just about quick reflexes. It's about recovering fast enough to perform explosively, over and over again.

Without a strong aerobic and anaerobic base, technical quality erodes. The details that separate good from elite disappear, not from lack of skill, but from lack of conditioning to sustain it.

FTC Tuesday Tip: Rotation as Containment

Anchoring is defined as the ability to stop and contain movement.

Another method of containment is to use dynamic rotation to change direction within one’s positional range.

This contains the move so that it does not overflow, and the goalie stays in command of their positioning.

Sometimes this change in direction means literally moving in the opposite direction.
Sometimes this change in direction means moving in the same direction but on a different course.

Dynamic rotation combines with the edge and post anchors to contain movement within the goalie’s desired range.
