What does riding in Ecuador actually feel like? 🇪🇨🚲

Adventure is probably the best word for it.

The purpose of this trip isn’t to find the hardest trails we can ride. It’s to experience a completely different part of the world from the seat of a bicycle.

Many of the trails we’ll ride have been purpose-built with sustainable, approachable grades in mind. The climbs are steady and rideable, meaning you don’t need to be an elite cyclist to enjoy them. If you’re in moderate physical condition and comfortable spending a few hours on a bike, you’ll be just fine.

But the riding is only part of the experience.

You’ll be pedalling through landscapes that feel completely foreign to southern Manitoba — lush jungle, mountains, remote gravel roads and vegetation unlike anything we have at home.

And then there are the sounds.

You may catch a glimpse of some of Ecuador’s incredible wildlife along the way, but there’s one animal you’re almost guaranteed to experience: the howler monkey. You’ll often hear them long before you ever see them — their calls rolling through the jungle while you ride.

One of our gravel days even takes us to a tiny craft brewery tucked away in the middle of the jungle, where we’ll stop, get off the bikes and take a break before continuing down the road.

That’s really what this trip is about.

Turning a corner and not knowing exactly what you’re going to see.

Hearing something in the jungle you’ve never heard before.

Eating food you’ve never tasted.

Riding roads you never imagined existed.

And occasionally finding a brewery where you least expect one.

If there’s a part of you that still loves the feeling of discovering something completely new, I think you’re going to love Ecuador.

We’re heading there this November. If this sounds like your kind of adventure, send me a message or check out the trip details through the link in our bio.

Purgatory 100 Gravel Race

It’s hard to believe the Purgatory 100 Gravel Race is less than two weeks away. This year, it happens on Sunday, September 13th.

Last year was the biggest party I attended all year. This year will be no different. 🍻

Food and beverages will be available after you cross the finish line.

Crank it to 11

I’ve been on my bike for the past 7+ days straight, and after a busy season of wearing many hats, it feels oh so good to get fast again.

There’s something amazing about coming up to a hill and attacking it. It’s the best feeling in the world.

A reminder that, if I want what I want, I have to be willing to do the thing that is hard.

Congratulations to everyone in the Country Cycle community for finishing the Glacial Gravel Grind this past Saturday.

There is no community like the Manitoba cycling community.

After a 100 km ride yesterday, I wasn’t sure how the legs would feel today. It took about a quarter of the ride before they started to find some strength again.

This video is from a segment at the Schinken Wald trails near Thornhill, just west of Morden, called “Pete Missed This for a Hike.”

Apparently, Russell Thiessen named it after I bailed on a ride with him and Cole to go for a hike instead 🤷🏼‍♂️

With 1,000 metres of climbing, stunning prairie views, and the best company anyone could ask for, the Glacial Gravel Grind has earned its place as one of the great events on Manitoba’s cycling calendar.

Thanks to Derek and Dark Red Racing for putting on such a fantastic event!

Next up: Purgatory 🔥
