Compound exercises are much more beneficial to the athlete and every everyday life. More than one muscle and more than one joint is often used in both sports and life movements. Individually working the muscles is fine, but I normally only use that in rehab scenarios or if someone is bodybuilding.

More muscles used the more calories are burned, but my main focus is the movement itself. Many athletic movements involve multiple muscles in multiple joints, making compound exercises much more functional for the athlete. The athlete will push with one arm, drive with one leg, reach with both arms and so on.

Just be aware that reps, sets an exercises that matter for the individual athlete and what they are trying to accomplish!

Compound include but are not limited to:
- bench press
- squats
- shoulder press
- bent over rows
- lunges

Understanding how the body moves and how the body is supposed to move is crucial for both athletes and non-athletes. By understanding how the body moves and realizing what it is supposed to do, means you put yourself in a much better position for your overall movements, whether it is trying to defend an opposing player, or trying to get a kitchen item down off the top shelf.

There are three planes of the movement. One is the sagittal plane. It divides the body in half left to right and involves movement on either side of the body. Think lunges, push-ups, or single arm row. Most of these movements are also in the horizontal plane, which is a term it should be a little more familiar with.

Second is the frontal plane. It divides the body in half front to back. For this one, think squats or shoulder press. Most of the movements in the frontal plane are vertical in motion.

The third plane of movement is the most overlooked and yet is the most used in both sports in everyday life. It involves rotation and divides the body from the top half to the bottom half.

The weight room is very important for athletes and everyone….but you need to realize what your goals are and what you are training. Training for strength is a little different than training for power, which is also a little different than training for size.

Training in the weight room and training for those qualities are essential for athletes; however, athletes also need to train to move better and more efficiently. Pushing, pulling, and lifting in the weight room are very important, but training movements that occur in all three planes are crucial in keeping the athlete performing to the best of their capabilities.

There is a lot of potential out there…. But what are you gonna do with that potential? Getting stronger is not easy. Gaining muscle is not easy. Losing weight is not easy. Building speed is not easy……but it all CAN be done!

Fred Duncan gives great picture of what Strength training can actually do as far as injury reduction. As I said in the email I just sent out, games and practises are not enough for the young athlete, especially if you wanna stay playing, instead of in the stands injured.

Games and practises won’t be enough for athletes to stay strong and fast. A 13 year-old is most likely to be different than an 18 year-old….. yet the training age of an 18-year-old might be the same as a 13-year-old. Do you know the difference? Are you able to prescribe the correct exercises for the right training age? The youth develop at different rates at different times. All 14 year-olds are not equal in physical capability… as you will know from looking at a sports team. Tall, short, strong, fast…. All youth are different! Whether it’s Strength, speed, or coordination.
