Baseball requires explosive, repetitive movements, from pitching and throwing to swinging, sprinting and fielding โšพ

A proper stretch and mobility routine can help maintain the range of motion needed to perform these movements efficiently while reducing unnecessary stress on the shoulders, hips, back and legs.

Feeling tight in your movement? Let's build a mobility routine centred around your goals ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ

Welp, it wasn't a jammed shoulder - we can tell you that! ๐Ÿ˜…

During Sunday's Welland Jackfish game in Chatham-Kent, Gianfranco Morello sustained a shoulder dislocation at second base.

A shoulder dislocation occurs when the head of the humerus (upper arm bone) is displaced from the glenoid (the shallow socket of the shoulder blade). Most commonly, the shoulder moves forward and downward out of the socket, which can stretch or damage the tissues, ligaments and cartilage that help keep the joint stable. Associated injuries to the nerves, blood vessels, rotator cuff or bone also need to be considered.

On the field, Trevor Kwolek supported Morello's elbow and forearm while maintaining control of the upper arm. Using slow, controlled positioning helped reduce protective muscle spasm and allowed the surrounding muscles to relax. From there, the humeral head could be carefully guided back over the rim of the socket and into the joint.

A successful reduction can provide rapid pain relief, but that doesn't mean the injury is healed.

Afterward, nerve and blood-vessel function must be reassessed; imaging is typically required to confirm the shoulder is properly aligned and rule out a fracture; and rehabilitation is needed to restore:

Range of motion ๐Ÿฆด
Rotator-cuff and shoulder-blade strength ๐Ÿ’ช
Proprioception and neuromuscular control ๐Ÿง
Sport-specific capacity for batting, throwing and fielding โšพ๏ธ

Return to play should be based on pain, stability, strength, range of motion and functional testing.

And because we apparently need to say it: please do NOT learn shoulder reductions from YouTube or Instagram and/or try this at home. ๐Ÿ˜…

Weโ€™ll be working with Morello to make sure his rehab is safe, strong, and on track because playoffs are around the bend!
