BC Sailing's Safety at Sea instructors from this weekend's courses held at Royal Vancouver Yacht Club and University of British Columbia's pool. From left: Andrew Liebmann, Peter Salusbury, David Sutcliffe, Vern Burkhardt, Stewart Jones, Jason Bowman, Scott Shaw-MacLaren - all who volunteer to teach and enhance sailor's safety knowledge, and all have deep offshore sailing experience, including many Vic-Maui, Van Isle 360 and Pacific NW Offshore races under their collective belts. Check for expired firing heads and lights
Must be manufactured within the last 15 years (2011 or newer)
Must meet the new OSR requirements that apply to your race

New 2026 Safety Requirement Changes Are Here — Make sure your gear is compliant. Perfect time to upgrade and SAVE!

With updated 2026 safety regulations now in effect for Category 3 and 4 racing, many sailors will find their current lifejackets no longer meet the new requirements.

Key Changes for 2026 - What’s required under the new rules (OSR 5.01–5.04) For Category 3 races (with reduced requirements for Category 4), lifejackets must be:
✔️ Gas inflatable, manufactured after 2011
✔️ Minimum 150N buoyancy
✔️ Compliant with approved UL or ISO standards

Lifejackets must be fully equipped with:
✔️ Manual or automatic gas inflation system
✔️ Whistle secured by cord & retro-reflective material
✔️ Ride-up prevention (crotch or thigh straps)
✔️ Emergency position-indicating light
✔️ Sprayhood
✔️ Integrated deck safety harness compliant with OSR 5.02
Additionally, Spare cylinders and activation heads must be carried onboard for each lifejacket type.
👉 Missing even one of these items? Your lifejacket may no longer be compliant under the new rules.
