Killer Whale – Ray Natraoro – Lions Gate – Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation)

This piece, created by Ray Natraoro, depicts a killer whale through bold cut-out forms that reveal the surface behind it. Installed at the Lions Gate Community Recreation Centre, the rectangular work uses contrast between solid black aluminum and transparent negative space to create a sense of depth and connection between the artwork and its architectural surroundings.

During National Indigenous History Month, we’re highlighting Indigenous public art across the City of North Vancouver & North Vancouver District.

Join us on Sunday, June 14 from 2-3pm at Lynn Creek Community Recreation Centre for the showcase of NVRC Artist-in-Residence Ghazal Majidi’s collaborative augmented reality project! ✨📱

In April, Ghazal worked with children and families in a collage and augmented reality workshop, inviting participants to create imaginative artworks and write prompts about how their creations might come to life. Inspired by these ideas, Ghazal selected ten collages to animate using stop motion, 2D animation and generative AI, transforming them into interactive augmented reality experiences.
Visitors can scan QR codes beside each artwork and watch the collages come alive on their phones.

Come celebrate the creativity of our community and explore the intersection of art, storytelling and emerging technology!

Killer Whale – Ray Natraoro – Delbrook – Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation)

This piece, created by Ray Natraoro, depicts a killer whale, an important figure in many Coast Salish traditions symbolizing strength, family and connection to the ocean. Installed at the front entrance of the Delbrook Community Recreation Centre, the circular white form is framed by a square backing plate, creating a balance between fluid movement and structured geometry.

During National Indigenous History Month, we’re highlighting Indigenous public art across the City of North Vancouver and North Vancouver District.
