The BCJJF proudly presents “Regionals Championship”

December 12th & *13th
*we may make this a 2 day event in an effort to keep the tournament covid safe

Venue: Roll Academy 286 Pemberton Ave, North Vancouver, BC V7P 2R5

We are excited to provide the community with an opportunity to compete however, this tournament will not be like any tournament hosted by us in the past. In order to provide a safe environment for athletes to compete we will be creating a different model for this event so please make sure you read all the following information and future updates as they come out.

This tournament will only have adult divisions for male and female both gi and nogi

Bracket style format. Single elimination. This is because we need to keep the tournament efficient and on time as we will be on a tight schedule in order to give more athletes the opportunity to compete.

There will only be 2 weight classes per belt (gi) or experience level (nogi)

There will only be a maximum of 16 competitors per division separated into 2 pods of 8 with the winner of each pod facing off in the final.

Athletes will compete for third place.

There will be NO POINTS at this event. Victory will be determined by either a submission or a referee’s decision. This is because we have to keep the number of people in the building to a minimum. By doing this we won’t need scorekeepers, time keepers etc.

In case of referee’s decision the victor will be determined based on SUBMISSION ATTEMPTS to the referees discretion. Meaning positional dominance will NOT be factored into the referee’s decision unless there are no submission attempts. It will be to the referee’s discretion on whether or not the submission attempt was weak or strong with the stronger more threatening submission attempts being valued higher than a weak one. (Example: Pretending to go for an ankle lock will not outweigh extending someone’s arm in an arm bar followed by an escape. However the strength of the attempt is to the referee’s discretion and there will be ZERO tolerance for disputing.)

All matches will be 5 minutes in length regardless of rank or experience level. This is to ensure that we can keep the divisions moving, as we will be limited to how many people can be in the building at once.

Rules

We will be following IBJJF standard as far as legal and illegal techniques. The only exception to this is we will be allowing reaping and heel hooks for NOGI PURPLE AND ABOVE

Due to no scoring, minor fouls will result in a warning from the referee for first offense, Disqualification for second offenses. All major fouls will result in an immediate DQ.

Examples of minor fouls:
1. a reap without a submission in a division that does not allow reaping. You will be asked to reposition yourself. If ignored or done again, you will be disqualified. If you are unfamiliar with what reaping is discuss this with your Professor/Coach
2. fleeing the mat area to avoid takedown, sweep, pass. This will result in the referee warning you once, on second offense, DQ
3. small joint manipulation
4. illegal grips on the sleeves of the gi

Examples of major fouls:
1. Reaping with a submission in a division where reaping is not allowed.
2. Slamming
3. Arguing with the referee
4. Fleeing the mat area while in a submission

If you have questions regarding other situations feel free to send us an email.

PLEASE NOTE: ALL FOULS ARE TO THE DESCRETION OF THE REFREE AND DECISION MADE IS FINAL

Due to the limitation on number of athletes able to compete we will be only allowing a maximum of 4 athletes per gym to compete. (not per team, meaning if you are part of a large team with many locations you are only limited by the number of competitors in the gym you are registered under in the application)

There will be no spectators whatsoever due to COVID-19 limitations. We intend to provide a stream for spectators to watch through an Instagram live feed. Please Follow to view.

Coaches pleases understand that we will be very strict on who is allowed inside the building at a time. Therefore there will be only 1 coach for your entire team throughout the day. ZERO EXCEPTIONS.

Once we have received applications and filled out brackets we will provide scheduling information and more info in regards to how the tournament will run so if your application gets accepted and you are registered please watch your emails for this information as it will be extremely important that all athletes cooperate and are at the venue on time (not early or late). This will ensure that we can give the community what they want in a COVID-19 friendly way!

If you have any questions or concerns please send us an email to [email protected]

Tournaments are not only for the aspiring champions to hone their skills but also provide the opportunity for all practitioners to experience personal growth and the opportunity to try to be better than you were the day before. The importance isn’t on whether or not you succeed but on how much you learn.
We would like to thank the academies, athletes, coaches, volunteers and sponsors for supporting this tournament and look forward to seeing everyone at the next one. .
