I am deeply saddened by the loss of my teacher and forever grateful for his teachings. As I reflect on the passing of Grandmaster Ooi, I am reminded of what a privilege it was to have been one of his students.

I started with Master Ooi in 1985, the year he arrived in Canada. Classes were tough and he was even tougher, always pushing you to the limit, wanting to bring the best out of you. He had a simple protocol - train hard and don't be complacent. A few of you might still remember hearing him ask, "What for you train?" A retorical question for anyone not applying themselves. He was old school, strict and hard to please. Working you to exhaustion because he wanted you to aspire to be better, and often using his catch phrase, "One more for good measure". I will treasure those good old days when classes were intense, a time when we didn't have paddles, floor mats or protective gear. All that was needed was his leadership, strength, knowledge and spirit.

Thank you Master for all of your lessons.
Rest in peace Grandmaster Ooi

Respectfully Master Walter Lo

I think I did us proud, considering I was the only 60 year old training.

One last kick and it's off to new beginnings.
✌🏻
Heartfelt gratitude for all the support and kind words. It's been an emotional week cleaning out the studio and saying our goodbyes. Endings are sentimental but let's not lose sight of the journey that brought us to this point. Thank you for being a part of so many great memories! I hope as you look back on your journey you are filled with joy, but more importantly you are motivated to face new beginnings.
