Stress Response During a Threat of Violence.

When faced with a threat of violence, the human body undergoes a complex physiological and psychological response designed for survival. This is often referred to as the fight-or-flight response.

The Fight-or-Flight Response: This automatic reaction is triggered by the release of adrenaline and cortisol, hormones that prepare the body for immediate action. The primary goal is to either confront the threat (fight) or escape it (flight).

Physical Symptoms: Increased heart rate and blood pressure, Rapid breathing, Sweating, Trembling, Muscle tension, Dry mouth, Tunnel vision, Dilated pupils

Psychological Symptoms: Fear, Anxiety, Panic, Confusion, Disorientation, Difficulty concentrating

Beyond Fight or Flight: While the fight-or-flight response is well-known, it's important to recognize that there are other potential reactions:

Freeze: In some cases, people may experience a "freeze" response, where they become immobile and unable to act.

Fawn: This response involves people-pleasing or excessive compliance in an attempt to appease the threat.

The Impact of Long-Term Exposure: Repeated exposure to threats of violence can lead to: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Anxiety disorders, Depression, Difficulty trusting others, Relationship problems, Substance abuse

To navigate the post incident landscape, it is important to understand the stages of response, especially the letdown phase.

- Alarm
- Mobilization
- Action
- Letdown (post incident stress management)

It's crucial to seek professional help if you're struggling to cope with the aftermath of a violent threat. 08/06/2024

When being overwhelmed by someone's fury, it's important to cover up or, as we call it
"Holy s**t block" However, covering up without movement just makes you a punching bag. When overwhelmed, it's crucial to cover up while utilizing your footwork to get you into a better position in order to reset and counter.
