One of the biggest breakthroughs from this weekend’s Optimize Your Seat clinic had nothing to do with forcing riders into a “perfect position.”

Instead, we focused on helping riders become more connected, supported, and adaptable in the saddle.

We worked on:
• finding a more neutral, supportive spine in the saddle and on the mat
• allowing the pelvis and hips to follow the horse’s movement more effectively
• reducing gripping and bracing through the seat and thighs
• improving rider stability through breath, pelvic floor engagement, and postural organization
• creating softer, more following arms and hands by improving shoulder blade stability and ribcage position

The changes in both horses and riders were almost immediate.

As riders learned to move WITH their horses instead of against them:
• sitting trot became quieter and more effective
• full seat canter became more fluid
• downward transitions improved dramatically
• riders were able to influence tempo more from their seat instead of relying on rein pressure
• horses became softer, more relaxed, and more responsive

One of my favourite conversations from the clinic was around the idea that a following seat should not be “loosey-goosey” or disconnected. Riders need enough support and stability through their core and pelvic floor to protect the lower back while still allowing the hips to stay soft, elastic, and responsive to the horse’s movement.

Thank you for having me out to teach this clinic to you and your students! Can’t wait for the next one.

Strong. Balanced. Connected.

That’s the goal. 💫

Some days with Sierra feel less like riding a horse and more like negotiating with a tiny, opinionated dragon. 🐉🤍

Her stubbornness rivals my own, which means every ride is teaching me just as much patience as it’s teaching her trust. With a green horse, it’s easy to get caught up in the “doing”… The circles, transitions, patterns, and progress. But lately, I’ve been trying to add more structure and consistency to our sessions so she can start to understand that my job is to guide her, not trap her.

I want her to trust that what I’m asking will make sense, will keep her safe, and might even be… fun.🤩

Partnership isn’t built in one perfect ride or groundwork session. It’s built in the quiet repetitions, the tiny try, the deep breath after tension, and the moments where both horse and rider decide to meet each other halfway.

She keeps me humble, that’s for sure. But she’s teaching me that softness and structure can exist together, and that trust takes time to grow roots. 🌱

Thank you for your continued guidance and support as I bring along this young mare!

When I’m working with client horses, I always seem to have an answer, a solution, or a next step to help the horse to learn, to feel confident and relaxed. I love to help clients build stronger partnerships and to communicate effectively with their horses. But when working with my own horse, the self-doubt creeps in, and there are moments where I freeze, or get stuck!

Having a coach of my own, who is so well-versed in natural horsemanship practices, helps me to move forward when I get stuck, and to remind me that although she is my pet, and I love her, I need to set the same boundaries and expectations as I would with a client horse. Sometimes we need to be loud to be clear, and sometimes we need to be quiet. To be clear is to be kind, and will ultimately set her up for success, as a horse who interacts with humans regularly.

Trusting the process, one session at a time! 🩶

Some horses only truly rest when they feel safe. 💛

There’s something incredibly special about earning the kind of trust where a horse feels comfortable enough to close their eyes, sink into the hay, and fully relax beside you. No force. No pressure. Just quiet connection.

Riley doesn’t care about ribbons, titles, or perfection. He cares about consistency, kindness, and feeling understood. Moments like this remind me that horsemanship isn’t about control, it’s about building a partnership strong enough that your horse chooses to trust you.

The soft moments matter too. Maybe even the most. ✨
