Amazing camouflage on rocky beaches — the Piping Plover! Durham County, Ontario. 31 May 2026.
We had the amazing opportunity of viewing a large flock of Black Terns foraging on recently emerged damselflies! The high wind was thrusting the damsels off the vegetation and into the hungry mouths of the terns. The ebb and flow and intricacy of the natural world!

“Five Minute Wonder”
You just never know what you may see…
Upon arriving at a lagoon, we parked our cars and shared the parking space with…a breeding plumage American Golden-Plover!! A very rare sighting in spring in far-eastern Ontario. A delight to see.

Rare Bird Alert:
I love finding, at certain times of the year common and expected, but, by the date, now rare, birds! A Cackling Goose — an expected March and April bird in southern Ontario — but, by May, during the Festival of Birds — ha! Good luck with that. Dare to Dream.
Well, I dream…
And my dream came true!
It had been 18 years (per eBird data) since a Cackler had been found during the Festival of Birds in the Point Pelee region. It was a pleasure to view one, especially the circumstance of watching three geese fly in from the lake, and one of them being so, so small…

In early morning light, the continuing rarity, the Black-headed Gull, flew in with Bonaparte’s Gulls and landed close to shore. What a treat to view!
