Ottawa dancers, join me for a 4-week Tiempo/ Contratiempo Musicality series starting October 3!

We’ll explore two different ways of moving through Cuban music: tiempo and contratiempo. We’ll break down the music, isolate instruments and rhythmic patterns, and learn to recognize the cues that help us find each timing.

Then we’ll bring it into movement through Son, Salsa and Cha-cha-chá, practice switching between timings, and explore how to use them in your social dancing.

We’ll learn a little about its history, explore the structure of a Danzón, and learn the basic steps.

A 4-week musicality class for Salsa, Casino and Son dancers. We’ll break down tiempo (dancing on1) and contratiempo (dancing on2), listen to the instruments that help us understand each timing and explore how to move between them in social dancing.

Danzón | Intro Workshop

A new addition to our curriculum this year: Cuban Danzón!🎉

Curious about Cuba’s national dance and how it helped shape the Cuban music and dances that followed?

Born in 19th-century Cuba, Danzón became an important part of the evolution of Cuban popular dance music, with its legacy extending into forms such as mambo and cha-cha-chá.

This stand-alone intro-level workshop will be offered twice in this block, so you can choose the date that works best for you.

Let's play with timing and have fun!

In this series, we'll explore tiempo and contratiempo and how different timing choices change the feeling of the dance.

This is not a pattern-focused course. Rather than learning long combinations, we'll focus on listening to the instruments, understanding timing and developing more options for expressing what we hear in the music.
