If you know the song you know

It was Christmas Eve, babe
Outside the stadium gates
An old man said to me, "Good things come to those who wait"
From the Terry Fox sidelines
And the Capital City blues
To the Fury years we lost
And the dues we had to choose.

I remember the scarf
From fourteen years ago
We were dreamers in the rain
And we’re brothers in the snow
I've got a feeling
This year belonged to us
So happy Christmas
I love you, Bytown Boys
You can see the Canal frozen over
And the South Side is golden tonight.

Singer 1:
They said we’d never do it
That the Shield was just a start
But Twenty-Five was different
It was written in our heart
When you first took my hand
On that cold November night
You promised me a banner
And a South Side bathed in light!
Singer 2:
We were Champions!
Singer 1:
We were Kings of the Country!
The North Star is ours
And we spent every penny!
The drums were all pounding
The confetti flew high
As we lifted the Cup
To the Ottawa sky.
Singer 2:
The boys of the Bytown choir
Were singing "Allez, Allez"
And the bells were ringing out
On Bank Street!

Singer 1:
You’re a glory-hound plastic
Who just joined the parade!
I remember the CSL
And the history we made!
Singer 2:
You’re an old-school fanatic
With a drum and a beer!
But we’re all Atleti
Now the trophy is here!
Both:
The boys of the Bytown choir
Still singing "Allez, Allez"
And the bells are ringing out
On Bank Street!

Singer 1:
I could have been someone.
Singer 2:
Well, so could anyone
But we’re the class of Twenty-Five
And the job is finally done.
Singer 1:
I kept the faith, babe
From the start to the end
I’ve built my life
With the South Side, my friend.

The boys of the Bytown choir
Are singing "Allez, Allez"
And the bells are ringing out
For the Champions of Canada!

Good King Wenceslas looked out
O'er the Bank Street siding,
Saw the snow begin to sprout
While the clouds were hiding.
Brightly shone the floodlights’ glow
Though the pitch was blurring,
Bytown Boys amidst the snow
Kept the passion stirring.
"Hither, Capo, stand by me,
Watch the red-clad runners;
Can the Cavalry truly be
Headed for the honors?"
"Sire, they come from western plains,
But they find no favor;
In this frost, through freezing rains,
It’s our home we savor!"
"Bring me drums and bring me flags,
Sing a song of thunder;
Watch as Calgary's spirit lags
Buried deep and under."
Through the drift and howling gale,
See the ball go flying;
Bytown’s heroes shall not fail,
While the fans are vying.
"Sire, the match is almost done,
And my breath is freezing;
But the trophy’s nearly won,
Victory is pleasing!"
"Mark the goal that sealed the fate,
Watch the scarves a-whirling;
Cavalry must exit late
While the smoke is curling!"
In the master’s steps they trod,
To the center podium;
Lifting silver o'er the sod,
Far from all encomium.
Therefore, fans, remember well,
When the snow starts falling:
How we sent them back to hell,
To the Bytown calling!

Come they told me, pa rum pum pum pum
A winter final won, pa rum pum pum pum
Through the swirling white, pa rum pum pum pum
Beneath the stadium light, pa rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum
In the freezing night, pa rum pum pum pum
The drum begins.
The South Side roaring, pa rum pum pum pum
The pitch is hidden deep, pa rum pum pum pum
But Section W stands, pa rum pum pum pum
With banners in our hands, pa rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum
From the heart of The Dub, pa rum pum pum pum
The drum begins.
The North Star Trophy, pa rum pum pum pum
Shines through the falling snow, pa rum pum pum pum
We braved the biting gale, pa rum pum pum pum
To see our boys prevail, pa rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum
Then we raised the Star, pa rum pum pum pum
For Atlético!

‘Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the North
The Bytown Boys gathered to bring their song forth.
The scarves were all hung by the railings with care,
In hopes that a trophy soon would be there.
The veterans remembered the days of the Fury,
When we marched for the Capital City, full of story.
Through the NASL heartbreaks and leagues gone away,
We kept the flame burning for a much better day.
We remembered the legends and the clubs of the past,
Knowing one day a title would find us at last.
Then out on the pitch there arose such a clatter,
The Dub stood together—the only thing that mattered!
The red and the white of Atlético shone,
On a squad of new heroes who made Ottawa home.
The drum started beating, the smoke filled the air,
The spirit of Bytown was felt everywhere.
With a gaffer so stoic, his tactics so keen,
The sharpest XI that the capital's seen!
"Now Didić! Now Antoniuk! Walker and Reid!
On Tissot! On Zapater! Take the final we need!"
To the top of the table! To the ultimate fight!
With the Bytown Boys chanting with all of their might!
We remember that Final—the roar of the crowd,
The City of Ottawa never so proud.
No "almost" this season, no "close but no prize,"
Just the glimmer of gold reflected in eyes.
The whistle blew loud, the job was all done,
The North was united, the trophy was won!
The history of Bytown is written in sweat,
From the Fury’s first goal to the greatest day yet.
So we’ll drink to the banners and the champions we've become,
The Bytown Boys family—forever as one.
He sprang to his feet, gave his scarf a big swing,
And we joined in the chorus that winners all sing:
"Happy Christmas to all, and to the Champions of the North, a goodnight!"
