National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
Today, September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation โ a day to honour the Survivors of residential schools, the children who never returned home, and their families and communities.
At Where I Thrive, weโre taking this day as an opportunity to learn, reflect, and take action as a community. Weโll be marking the day in three ways:
Wear Orange
Weโre encouraging our teachers and students to wear orange to class on Wednesday, September 30, in recognition of Orange Shirt Day and in honour of residential school Survivors.
Give Back
Where I Thrive will donate $2 for every client who attends class on September 30, and $3 for every client who attends wearing orange, to A7G โ an Indigenous youth-led and youth-driven grassroots non-profit organization focused on community support and opportunities for Indigenous youth in Unceded Algonquin Territory.
Here are Some Ideas to Learn More
We encourage our community to take some time to learn, listen, and reflect. Here are a few resources and ideas to explore:
๐งก Donate to an organization supporting Indigenous communities. Some organizations we recommend are the Legacy of Hope, Minwaashin Lodge, A7G and Indspire
๐งก Support local Indigenous businesses. We are getting our orange shirts from Adaawewigamig in the Byward Market
๐งก Learn about Indigenous history and culture by watching films and documentaries. Some resources are Calls to Action and the Reconciling History Walking Tours in Ottawa (Sarah, Jamie & Oliver recommended)
๐งก Read and understand the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action
๐งก Write your MP and urge them to fully implement these Calls to Action
๐งก Listen to Indigenous podcasts and music. CBC is a great resource for this
๐งกโ Show your support by wearing orange
We encourage our community to take action to raise awareness of the very tragic legacy of residential schools, and to honour the thousands of Survivors.โ Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process.โ
