The Jock is opening up. This is a video of the river below the fen. Most of it is open except for an ice jam near Joy's road.
Video is a little jerky, but still gives a good view of what it looks like right now.

Race starts three weeks from tomorrow and the river is starting to open up. The first picture is from the start line which is now fully open, but the fen remains quite frozen. The second picture is of the finish line where there is still an ice jam.
Just under 100 boats registered, things are looking good!
Race date set for April 16th, 2022! Online registrations open February 5th.

Hope everyone is staying safe and enjoying the holidays! Winter is just ramping up, but I'm already missing paddling and looking forward to some spring fun races!
Leave it to Max Finkelstein to not wait for spring. He took advantage of the couple warmer mid December and higher water levels to run the Jock. He had to break a bit of ice and it sure looks chilly, but that's one creative way to enjoy the Jock river! Thanks for sharing the pictures.
Happy New Year!

The Jock River Race has to unfortunately be cancelled again this year. With already 125 teams registered and two weeks left to the planned race start, it would've been a banner year. Thanks once again to racers, sponsors, volunteers, friends and family who every year help make this event happen!
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the race which started back in 1971 making it one of the oldest paddling races in Ontario. At the time the race was put together to celebrate a new weir which had been installed on the river and took place on the Lower Jock from Richmond to the Ottawa river. A sample of the race results is below. If anyone participated in the first few races and has a story to share, please reach out!
For now stay safe and see you next year!

The last couple of warm days have taken a lot of the ice off the Jock! The first photo is from Monday, the second from Wednesday this week. There would still be plenty of ice in the fen, but looks like an early year this year.
For those wondering about update to race plans, we're still monitoring public health guidelines and will provide an update by early April. Keep safe out there!
Someone asked how registrations were going given covid-19 and the possibility of having to limit number of entries. So far there are 56 entries in the following classes.
Canoe - Solo 8
Canoe - Tandem 18
Kayak - Solo 24
Kayak - Tandem 1
SUP 5
