We love a good throwback. The flora and fauna are out of this world around this time of year apparently! Here are some pictures snapped during the third week of June in 2024, 2025, and this year.

Be on the lookout for faces that show up year after year because there are lots! And if you’re one of those long time Nordic Walkfitters, let us know in the comments!

While most poles will work for most people there are some considerations especially for our taller and heavier friends.

For example the UrbanX Fitness poles adjust to fit walkers who are 4’2” to 6’2” and each pole can bear about 90lbs which gives it the capacity for walkers up to 225lbs (don’t worry about the math!) So if you happen to be 6’4” and weigh 250lbs, those aren’t the right poles for you! (You’re probably going to want to look at the Activator 2 poles which can support your weight and will reach the right height for proper technique.)

The other thing we like to remind you about is how collapsible a pole is. If you want to be able to throw them in your backpack or suitcase, some poles will work better as they break down to a smaller size or come apart into sections for easier packing.

While we offer regular walks throughout the week, there are also our hiking adventures for the explorers out there!

Our regular walks explore West Ottawa in areas like Barrhaven and Kanata, but our region holds many more delights. We’ll take on longer and more technical hikes spanning the Ottawa-Gatineau area and the Ottawa Valley.

So if you’re looking for something a little more daring, ask us about our next hiking adventure!

Bones are in a constant state of break and build. This cycle, like many others, works differently as we age due to changes in hormones and activity. Women are at a higher risk than men, but all aging people should be aware of osteoporosis and start looking to prevent this bone density loss.

A great way to combat this is with load bearing activities like walking and weight lifting.

Nordic walking is uniquely suited for supporting bone health because it takes regular walking and its lower body load bearing and turns it into an exercise that adds load bearing to your upper body. One exercise with benefits for the whole skeleton.

Posture is key. It’s not your fault that gravity naturally pulls your shoulders forward as time ticks on, but working on a tall posture can combat pain and improve breath intake. A long spine and shoulders back create room for deep energizing or relaxing breaths.

Nordic walking is a fun way to work on the muscles that help hold your body upright.

Osteoporosis affects 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men in Canada and bone density loss begins earlier than you think. As early as your mid-thirties, the cycle of bone repair may begin to falter, especially if you are sitting at a desk all day.

While there is no single cause of osteoporosis, one thing that can help combat it is adding load bearing exercises to your routine. This can include regular walking or running, yoga, and weightlifting, but Nordic walking is uniquely beneficial because it spreads load bearing across your body in a single activity.

So for those of you that aren’t gym lovers, this low impact, single outdoor activity may be the easiest way to add this bone strengthening exercise in!
