Teaching Tip: How to Integrate Breathwork Into Your Yoga Classes

One of the most powerful ways to deepen a yoga practice isn’t through more complex postures — it’s through the breath.

For teachers, breathwork can transform a class from simple movement into a nervous system experience that supports regulation, presence, and emotional balance. But one of the biggest mistakes teachers make is offering advanced breath techniques too quickly or without enough context.

✨ For Beginners:
Keep it simple and accessible.
Start with:
• Awareness of natural breath
• Lengthening the exhale
• Gentle diaphragmatic breathing
• Breath synchronized with movement
• Simple pauses to notice sensation

Avoid overwhelming students with too much terminology or complicated ratios early on. The goal is safety, ease, and awareness — not performance.

✨ For More Experienced Students:
You can begin layering:
• Breath retention practices
• Structured pranayama ratios
• Energizing vs calming techniques
• Subtle bandha awareness
• Emotional observation through breath

Advanced students often benefit from understanding why a technique is being used — nervous system regulation, grounding, focus, vitality, emotional release, etc.

✨ Teaching Reminder:
The breath sets the emotional tone of the room.

Fast, forceful breathing can stimulate and energize. Slow, steady exhalations can calm anxiety and support regulation. Your sequencing, pacing, and cueing should support the intended energetic effect of the practice.

Breathwork doesn’t need to be complicated to be transformative.

Sometimes one conscious breath is enough to change the entire experience of a class.

✨ Celebrating the Graduation of Our 2025–2026 Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training ✨

This month, we celebrated the completion of an extraordinary 8-month journey of growth, transformation, connection, and deep study.

Students gathered at PranaShanti from across Canada and the United States — including as far away as British Columbia, Illinois, and New York — united by a shared commitment to self-discovery, practice, and the teachings of Kundalini Yoga.

Over these months together, there were countless moments of insight, healing, laughter, vulnerability, and awakening. So many “aha” moments. So much personal growth. And friendships that will continue far beyond the training itself.

Throughout the training, Devinder guided us each weekend with wisdom, compassion, authenticity, and heart. Her ability to create a space that was both deeply grounding and transformational made this experience truly unforgettable. Through her teachings, storytelling, and lived experience, students were encouraged not only to learn Kundalini Yoga, but to embody it in daily life.

We are also deeply grateful for the incredible support of our teaching assistants — Chantal, Lynn, Marie, and Shane — whose presence, encouragement, and dedication helped hold such a strong container for learning and transformation throughout the program.

A special blessing to also have Dev Suroop and Mahan Rishi join us in person to share their wisdom, experience, and teachings with the group. Their presence added such depth and richness to this journey.

Teacher training is about so much more than learning to teach yoga. It is a process of remembering who you are, deepening your relationship with yourself, and learning how to live with greater awareness, compassion, and authenticity.

Congratulations to this beautiful graduating class. We are so proud of each of you and cannot wait to see how you continue to share your light in the world. 💛
