Peterborough, ON β In 2026, the Peterborough Liftlock Atom Hockey Tournament, a beloved winter sports tradition, will conclude with its 66th edition. This event has inspired young players, many of whom achieved professional success.
Beginning in 1958-59 as a small P*e Wee tournament, it evolved into the Atom (now U11) category by 1974. Under Neil Clark's leadership, it expanded to become one of North America's most respected tournaments, attracting over 100 teams from Ontario, Quebec, and the U.S. The tournament's motto, "Not just a hockey tournament...It's a community affair," reflects its impact, with proceeds supporting local players and charities.
Notable alumni include:
- Wayne Gretzky
- Eric Lindros
- Bob Gainey
- Corey Perry
- Steve Larmer
- John Vanbiesbrouck
- Tie Domi
- Mickey Redmond
- Cory Stillman
- Mike Fisher
These players highlight the tournament's reputation as a breeding ground for hockey excellence.
The decision to end the tournament is due to several challenges:
- Lack of Volunteers: The event has relied on local volunteers, but securing enough help has become difficult.
- Minor Hockey Changes: Shifts in the minor hockey landscape have presented challenges.
The 2026 edition will be a celebratory farewell, marking the end of a beloved tradition that has been part of Peterborough's identity for over six decades. Its legacy will endure in the hearts of those who participated, volunteered, and cheered at the Peterborough Liftlock Atom Hockey Tournament.
