Lastly, the Role of the Skip

1. You are in charge of your team as director. You must decide, with your opponent, any dispute or refer it to the umpire. Sign both score sheets at the end of a match, and act as scorer in a pairs match.

2. It is part of your job to instruct your Lead and Vice as to how you want them to play their shots with the best chance of producing a score for your team. Should one of your teammates fail to make the shot called for, don't be critical. Remember, the player knows without being told that it was a bad shot.

3. Stand still, don't move around the head. This can be quite distracting to other players.

4. When your opponent delivers the last bowl at the conclusion of an end, it is your responsibility to remove the mat.

5. It is important to remember that as the director of your team, your attitude towards your teammates and the game will often make the difference between a loss or win. The purpose of the game is to enjoy yourself, make it enjoyable for others and win if you can. But, when your team is down and the breaks seem to be all going against you, even the most naĂŻve should recognize that encouragement of your team may accomplish what caustic criticism or languishing on the bench when the Lead or Vice is on the mat can never, never accomplish. You may not win the game, but your popularity will increase immeasurably.

Tips For Skips

1. Leads should not be asked to drive (roll runners).

2. Skips should decide which hand plays best and stick with it if possible.

2. Build each head safely. If you must lose an end, it should be by a low score.

4. When you have the shot, bowl for position. When you're down a shot, draw.

5. Do not call for position bowls that will give your opponents a chance to wick in or rest on.

6. Try to cover all positions that jack would take if wicked.

7. Know when your team is in a position to make a big score.

8. The drive is both an offensive and defensive weapon. Use it to nullify an end, move the jack, or push a bowl up.

9. Blocks are very difficult to make. Practice block shots with opposite hand.

Instructions for A New Vice

First, have a basic knowledge of the Rules and Regulations. Everyone should read the WBB Laws of the Game.
At the beginning of the game, identify and remember the bowls of the players on your team.
When first arriving at the head, note the position of the jack and bowls and which bowl or bowls are shot.
Always stand back of the head, behind the jack. Do not move when bowls are being delivered. When the opposing skip is delivering, stand behind the opposing vice.
Indicate clearly any change in the head: one up – one down - or a measure.

NOTE: Signals are better than words.

To show jack high – swing one arm across in front of you.
To show distance, long or short of the jack, hold open palms apart, indicating the approximate distance.
To show a longer distance, extend one arm, palm down, horizontal to the green, at shoulder height or above your head.
This is our bowl – point to the bowl or bowls and then to yourself.
Opponents bowl – swing hand in a brushing motion over the bowl.
It’s a measure – join thumbs and index fingers in front of you, then pull hands apart and together again.
Here is the jack – cup hand/ heel down, toe up,on the green, just behind the jack.
Reporting the score:
o One shoulder slap for each point up
o One thigh slap for each point down
during or after the completion of the end.
If asked by your skip the position of the jack or bowls or the head, you may only respond when your skip has possession of the mat, prior to bowling the bowl.
When the bowl has come to rest, possession of the mat reverts to the opposing skip.
Make sure the last bowl has been delivered before counting or disturbing the head. The skip delivering the last bowl shall pick up the mat indicating the end is finished.
NOTE VICES: Always help the leads in raking the bowls .

Let's review our roles and responsibilities, starting with the lead.
Every role is important on the team...just remember to have fun and enjoy the game!

IF YOU ARE A LEAD
You Are Responsible
To place the mat (guidance from the Skip)
To roll the jack to the distance where your Skip is standing.
To deliver the first bowl for your team to start the end.
To develop the head, with suggestions from your Skip.
To help round up the bowls for the raker at the completion of an end.

A team is made up of two, three or four bowlers, with the Skip being the leader. Try and follow the Skip’s suggestions to the best of your ability with regards to: (a) the direction (or "hand") used to deliver your bowl; and (b) where to place your bowl. If for any reason you are unable to comply, at an opportune time, call your Skip aside and explain. Your Skip's leadership, instructions and encouragement are part of the strategy for your team to have success and enjoy the game.

Except when delivering your bowl or when raking bowls at the completion of an end, you should be well back from the area of play - preferably seated on chairs or standing still behind the ditch when playing with 3 or 4 bowlers. This is appreciated by all players.

Generally, (a) the losing Lead for an end shall rake the bowls, ensure that all bowls are on the proper side and behind the end of the mat. (b) the winning Lead shall place the mat and prepare to roll the jack.

When playing with 3 or 4 bowlers Leads should stay clear of the head at the completion of an end, allowing the Vice Skips to take sole responsibility for counting the score. In some cases, the Skips or a REFEREE may be required to determine the count.

Every new season, it's important to review some basic lawn bowling rules and etiquette.

Some of the unwritten guidelines
Before the game
*Always be on time for the start of play and for the start of each game. The PLBC requests that players arrive 15 min prior to start time so that tags/ draws can be arranged.
*Visitors are always made welcome
*Bowlers tend to start and finish a game with a handshake/fist bumb/ elbow bump

During the game

*Hand the jack to the opposing lead when he/she has placed the mat and have their first bowl ready to hand to them. This friendly gesture sets the tone for the game.
*When ready to bowl check with the next rink to see if another player is ready to bowl, so that you don't bowl at the same time
*All players should have their next bowl in their hand by the time the opposing player has delivered their bowl. Scrambling around searching for your bowl is not acceptable, especially in a time game
*Make sure that the path of the bowl is clear to avoid hitting another bowl
*Do not encroach on an adjoining rink when delivering your bowl
*Do not talk when another player is about to deliver a bowl
*Do not criticise bowls - either from your own team or the other
*Remember that your opponent has possession of the rink as soon as your bowl comes to rest, do not linger on the head and thereby obstruct the skips first bowl
*Take an interest in the game, follow how the head is building up so you do not have to ask other team members
*Congratulate an opponent on a well- played bowl
*Do not walk around talking to bowlers participating in other games, allow them to concentrate on their own game
*Do not pass or walk in front of the player who was last to play- they have the right to see how their bowl progresses
*No bowls should be touched or moved until the end is declared and then help return the bowls to behind the mat
*Help clear the head after the result has been determined
*Warn players on adjoining rinks if a drive is about to be played and be ready to try and stop any bowls going into other rinks and disturbing their heads
*Show a good spirit - win well and lose well
* IMPORTANT Leads and twos should remain behind the head or mat when not in possession of the rink and should not crowd the head or offer advice when bowls in contention are being measured – this is the job of the Three (or middle person).
*it is a courtesy for the “Three” or middle player of the team who has won the previous end to place his skip’s bowl on the mat before joining the other players at change over
*Walk quickly when changing ends and walk within the confines of the rink you are playing on.

And above all, enjoy and let play bowls!
