SARNIA'S MONTANINO, FORMER FLAG CAMPBELL ON SEASON-OPENING ROSTERS FOR STEELHEADS, STING; SON OF FORMER STING MAKES NORTH BAY

It appears John Montanino (below) has made the grade with the Brampton Steelheads. The 2010-born left-shot defenceman is listed on the teams roster on the OHL website for the 2026-27 campaign. However, it's unclear if the Sarnia native will be in the lineup tonight (Friday) when Brampton entertains the Oshawa Generals in the season debut for both teams.
Montanino, who previously played in the Lambton Jr. Sting organization, was a fifth-round pick by Brampton in June from the roster of the Detroit-Little Caesars program where he played last season. If during the season he needs some seasoning, his GOHL rights are held by the Strathroy Rockets.
Meantime, another Jr. Sting grad Dracen Campbell is listed on the Sting's 2026-27 roster to begin the season. The 19-year-old defenceman from Wallaceburg was the Stobbs Division rookie of the year in the PJHL with the Mooretown Flags in 2023-24. Last season he played in the BCHL after one season with Stratford of the GOHL. Campbell was added to the Sting training camp roster late last month after being let go from the Erie Otters camp.
And, Austin Brekelmans is on the roster of the North Bay Battalion. The Strathroy native, the son of former Sting Corey Brekelmans, was a seventh-round pick by North Bay in 2024.
