All smiles at our September Grass Roots Horse Shows | Durham Region 🐴🍂

Having an excellent schooling show at home for our students to get comfortable in the show ring is something we are so grateful we can offer our riders and off-property riders alike!

Keeping it simple, fun and safe for riders new to showing is our goal and keeping it as affordable as possible for new equestrians is so vital to growing the equestrian community 🩵🐴

Congratulations to all our riders and a big thank you to our staff for making the day so special!

Often times, for most riders the quiet moments in the barn with our horses before and after their lessons is the most special part of their time at Belle Wood.

While riding and progressing in the ring is the main attraction of taking lessons, learning about and bonding with your lesson horse is exceptionally rewarding as well! Every horse is different and likes or dislikes different things.

What is your favourite schoolies horse’s likes and dislikes? Or are they a pretty impartial pony just happy to be here? 🐴🍎🥕

Mr. Richard teaching the littles all about horse care!

Riding horse is so much more than just sitting on a horse’s back. Understanding the care and what ‘horsemanship’ truly means is essential in becoming a rider.

Although we all have fun jumping and cantering around, learning the basics like good grooming practices, how to muck a stall, what horses eat and need to thrive is vital to being a successful equestrian.

Check out Belle Wood’s horsemanship checklist of skills new riders should learn when they first start lessons 👇

• How to safely halter & lead their horse
• Safety equipment needed for working with horses
• How to groom a horse from head to hoof
• How to identify what requires first aid attention
• Barn safety rules
• How to tack your horse & understanding your equipment

We like to teach these basics right away (even to our Lil Rider program!) to keep students safe and horses happy!

Teamwork makes the dream work! 💪

One of the most important lessons horse shows teach us, is the importance of teamwork and enjoying the journey-not just the results!

You may not remember a mistake you made on course in 5 years, but you will always cherish the laughs and friendship you made with your barn friends 🩵🐴

We are looking forward to the 2027 season! Our lease program is designed to give riders a taste of what the world of horse showing and horse ownership looks like without the major costs associated.
