Last year my wife & I decided to try lawn bowling as a retirement activity we could do together. We found the club members very welcoming and helpful, offering tips & coaching to new beginners. The club offers a good mix of weekday & weekend matches and an additional dedicated weekday coaching clinic from May to Oct. The club greens are very well kept and loaner bowls are available for members. We have thoroughly enjoyed our 1st year and we intend to re-register this coming year.

After taking early retirement and looking for new ways to stay active and social outside of the gym. I decided to try lawn bowling with my hubby, something we could do together or separately. We signed up for PLBC’s three session, ‘Learn to Bowl’ and we were hooked!!

After years of playing sports we needed to do something that wasn’t as hard on the body, but still offered some type of competition and challenges. Lawn bowling provides this and more; it’s a sport/activity that requires accuracy, focus and tactical thinking. And it’s really fun!!

We were welcomed into the club, existing members were very friendly, helpful to all of us “newbies”. They provide coaching to help you learn and improve throughout the season.

The club hours are pretty flexible, they offer weekdays, evenings & weekend time slots. There’s plenty of opportunity to play in club matches or outside tourney’s from May to Oct. No special gear needed, the club provides loaner bowls. It’s budget friendly and social! We enjoyed our first year and are looking forward registering for this year. Hopefully we’ll bring some of our other friends along to roll the bowls with us!!

The Pickering Lawn Bowling Club sign caught my eye when my wife, Teresa and I were having a stroll from Nautical Village one sunny afternoon.
I always fancied having a go at bowls but never had the time when I was busy with work. I googled the clubs name and found details for the membership director I sent an email and got a prompt response inviting me to call up to the club at Liverpool Road to take advantage of three free (Yes free) lessons to see if I liked bowls.
When I arrived, Jackie introduced me to John who told me all about the club and the emphasis they placed on being friendly and sociable. My experience from that first day was one of being welcome and included.
John gave myself and some other rookies a short course on the basics of bowls (Bowls are loaned free in the first year). There was more skill involved than I anticipated but with the help and support of Don, Keith and Elaine I soon settled in and enjoyed learning a new hobby in a friendly welcoming environment.
I joined the club in July and have been going twice a week since then, sometimes in the morning and sometimes in the evenings. You can even bowl at the weekends if you want to. Some people go 7 days a week during the season.
All too soon the season and the summer weather came to an end and we found ourselves at the final event of the season, A supper dance and disco with a 60’s theme!! The dance floor never emptied and as soon as we walked in my wife Teresa remarked on the friendliness of everyone she met.
If your looking for a new hobby or social outlet, I would strongly recommend this club.

This Saturday, come out to try Lawn Bowls at the Pickering Lawn Bowl club, 910 Liverpool Road, Pickering Ontario.
1:30 pm, plenty of free parking.
Just wear flat sole shoes and we can do the rest to get you started rolling.
