Would you like to see Athletic Therapy covered under your extended benefits plan?

Even if it currently is (through a plan your employer is providing), if you change jobs, it might be missing from your next plan.

Developing Athletic Therapy skills can be difficult. During schooling or continued education training your colleagues likely don't have the deficits you are looking for. A lot is learned through description of what it will 'feel like' when you do come across an issue in the real world. So instead, you do some role playing, practice repeatedly, and hope you're executing the examination correctly. Time may one day tell.

11ish years deep and I finally got my first positive tests for McMurray and Apley's compression which weren't otherwise obvious. Unfortunately this means my client has a medial meniscal tear. Fortunately my hand feel, confidence and passion for my career have received another boost. Sorry if I seemed impressed with myself when I discovered what is wrong.

So when your Athletic Therapist says, 'Thank you for coming in today,' they do truly mean it. Thank you! Without our clients we wouldn't be where we are today. We wouldn't be as efficient with our hands during assessments or manual treatments. We wouldn't be able to speak with the confidence (from experience) that together we will get you through this. We wouldn't be spending hours away from the office searching for solutions to your problems you've put trust in us to solve. Smile while you hustle, and keep improving.

My bike is getting out of shape. I'm going for a ride.
Hopefully see you soon (on the trails, not my clinic)!
Happy Friday!

Could a common treatment for joint pain do more harm than good? | CBC News 10/19/2019

The trickle-down effect is real in the health care field. From discovery until 'pop-news stories'. Better late than never. Cortisone injections have their risks, and should never be the first option for treatment.

Aches and pains generally mean there is tissue damage occurring. Prevention is always the best course of action. If you correct biomechanics before the damage occurs, your joints will live a longer and happier life. It is all about those quality of life years.

Get after it.

Gladly supporting my old day-care, early years employer, provider of a bursary, and many nights of enjoyment. I knew early on how lucky I was to have The Hart Highlands Winter Club (Hart Ski Hill) so close to home, and I spent many evenings there with friends crushing laps. Still do. Happy to see it still going strong!

Head to the Hart Highlands Winter Club - Fall Fundraiser Saturday if you're around.

We are very thankful to all of our very generous supporters for our Fall Fundraiser! Alpine Athletics dropped off 4 athletic therapy sessions today!

Exercise as medicine: UBC researcher unveils new tool to fight depression | CBC News 10/13/2019

Exercise is 'medicine'.
Good to see the topic getting more public news support! There are seemingly endless benefits to living an active life, but this one is huge. Something I self-discovered while in University away from the mountains.

Exercise as medicine: UBC researcher unveils new tool to fight depression | CBC News Physical activity was recognized as a primary treatment method for mild to moderate depression in 2016 in Canada.

Matthew C, 44:
"I began to encounter very sharp knee pain the day after mountain biking. The pain was so severe I was starting to wonder if I would be able to continue riding at all which was very concerning as this is one of my favorite hobbies.

During my first visit to Craig, he did some tests, listened to my description and immediately seemed to know what the issue was. Craig gave me some exercises to start working on at home, and some advice on riding also. After the first visit I immediately noticed an improvement and by continuing to do the homework he gave me, and following his riding advice, I have not experienced the pain again since.

Working with Craig has changed the way I ride and given me the chance to enjoy my hobby again. I would recommend anyone with similar types of issues to visit Craig and see what he has to offer."

Sometimes injuries can present in weird and confusing ways. The 'detective work' I get to do during new assessments is my favourite part of the job,.. well, that and keeping people riding bikes pain free. Matthew's injury was resolved through biomechanical alterations and correcting the firing order of his muscles. It was luckily a quick fix, and hopefully I will see him out on the trails for decades to come!
